University of Florida students can seek medical attention in life-threatening incidents related to alcohol or drugs without fear of disciplinary action, under a policy university officials announced Monday.

UF's medical amnesty policy waives sanctions for underage drinking or other conduct-code violations in those cases. It is meant to encourage students to call 911 if they or their friends had too much to drink and need medical help, said Dave Kratzer, UF's interim vice president for student affairs.

"We believe it has great potential to save lives," he said.

The policy was announced at a meeting of the Community Alcohol Coalition, a task force of university, police and city officials. UF President Bernie Machen formed the group in 2005 during a period in which five students died in alcohol-related incidents around the start of his tenure at the university.

This needs to be implemented everywhere. People should not get in trouble for helpinng someone in need. This will stop those scared to help for fear of getting in trouble. Nobody should be afraid to help.
Excellent decision on the University of Florida's part.

Bout time. I have always said there should be a 'Good Samaritan' law that allows anyone to take someone to a hospital and then leave directly afterwards without fear of police interaction. Imagine you take someone to the hospital and then the cops arrest you.

does america not have these kind of alcohol/drug related kind of safe zone laws for say someone ODing?

ie. is it likely you will be charged if someone is admitted to hospital for help in such a situation?

Some states have enacted the 911 good samaritan law which provides immunity from simple possession charges, paraphenelia or being under the influence. I dont understand why it is not enfored as a federal law.

Simple way to save lives.
