To crush, or not to crush,

Hey guys, just a quick question, when I buy my ice, which I consider myself to be very fortunate, because the stuff I get is very pure and at a great price. Should I leave it in shards until ready to use, or can I go ahead and make a fine powder for storage? Am I damaging my stuff, or does it not matter at all? Feed back would be great. Thanks?
