TIL MDMA was patented over 100 years ago.... on Christmas eve

The original MDMA patent application was submitted on Christmas eve 1912. Decades later the now famous chemist Alexander Shulgin and his wife Ann Sulgin began exploring the therapeutic potential of the drug in the 1970s. This eventually resulted in MDMA's utilization in psychotherapy. After the prohibition of MDMA began the illegal use of products with varying concentrations of MDMA and other chemicals (Ecstasy) thrived. Now, after decades of prohibition MDMA is now in phase II clinical trials exploring the drugs therapeutic potential in treating PTSD. The results thus far are positive.
