this short series is set around a modern english girl who accompanies her friend to israel while she does her year's mandatory military service. in her spare time, the friend reads her grandfather's diary which outlines the situation the british army faced in palestine in the post war 40's.

both periods are shot superbly, this is really high quality production. the story is a bit convoluted, she could have just read the whole diary in one sitting, but the way she stretches it out extends both stories artificially. the acting is great, the main actress really hit the head of the nail in her ability to get under my skin. her character was really unlikeable to me through her extreme naivety and western ignorance and stubborn obnoxiousness, but i guess there's a point to be made there.

i highly recommend this emotional roller coaster.
