Man caught at Sydney airport with 14kg of heroin

February 17, 2009 02:22pm

AUTHORITIES say they have disrupted a global drug ring after arresting a 21-year-old Malaysian man at Sydney airport over a 14kg heroin haul.

The man was arrested by officers from the Joint Asian Crime Group yesterday as he was about to board an international flight.

The group comprises Australian Federal Police, NSW Police Force, Australian Customs, the Australian Crime Commission and the NSW Crime Commission.

Officers charged the man with the possession and supply of a large commercial quantity of a prohibited drug, which was tested and found to be high-quality heroin.

The investigation began last month following the arrest of two Singaporeans for the same offences.

AFP Assistant Commissioner Tim Morris said the arrest showed the value of cooperation between crime fighting agencies.

"The disruption of this transnational syndicate is an example of Australian law enforcement agencies working together against the global problem of drug trafficking," Mr Morris said today.

The Malaysian man was due to face Sydney Central Local Court today.

The maximum penalty for the offences he faces is life imprisonment and/or a $550,000 fine.

Parcel post leads to $2.1 million heroin seizure and arrest
Saturday, 21 Feb 2009 11:46am

A 25-year-old man will appear in a Sydney court today charged with importing a border controlled substance, namely heroin.

About 11.45am yesterday, the Australian citizen was arrested by operatives from the Joint Asian Crime Group (JACG) at the Broadway Post Office where he picked up a parcel.

Police conveyed the man to AFP Sydney office where an inspection of the parcel revealed three blocks wrapped in black electrical tape and denim jeans.

Police will allege in court that the blocks measured approximately 15cm x 10cm and contained a powder weighing approximately 2 kilograms.

Presumptive testing of the powder indicated the presence of heroin. The substance is the subject of further forensic testing to determine the purity.

The powder has an estimated potential street value of $2.1 million.

JACG operatives conducted a search of his car parked at the shopping centre, and seized documents.

The man was refused bail to appear in Parramatta Bail Court today charged with import commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, and possess a commercial quantity of an unlawful import (border controlled).

Overnight, search warrants were executed at his residential unit in Rhodes, as well as a relative’s house in Fairfield.

The JACG is a multi-agency, multi-disciplinary unit comprising the AFP, NSW Police Force, Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, the Australian Crime Commission and the NSW Crime Commission.

The specialist expertise of its member agencies is used to target major organised criminal activity of Asian syndicates in NSW.

The maximum penalty for this offence is life imprisonment.

Bush body linked to drug raid

Police say a body found in bushland near the border of New South Wales and Queensland is that of a man missing since a drug raid more than a fortnight ago.

The body of 30-year-old Jethro Matheson was found in the Border Ranges National Park near Kyogle, on the NSW north coast, on Friday.

Mr Matheson was last seen at a house at Condong, south of Tweed Heads, on January 14.

The next day, police raided the property and found more than 1,500 cannabis plants with a street value of more than $3 million.

Police say they are concerned about the welfare of a second man, 52-year-old Barry Grant, who remains missing.

This is a prime example of why Cannabis should be legalized. Poor guy/s its really sad, if it was a suicide I can say id probably do the same thing if I was looking at a life in jail.

The worst part is I can never see weed getting legalized in Australia and im sure this would happen fairly regularly, that is people committing suicide or having people murder them coz they got done with the drugs. Sorry, I just thought that deserved a word. Carry on

Tuesday, 24 Feb 2009 05:33pm

Central Metropolitan Region Enforcement Squad (RES) and Redfern Local Area Command officers have charged two men following the seizure of more than $60,000 worth of heroin.

About 10.40am yesterday (Monday 23 February 2009) police stopped and searched a black BMW four wheel drive on Pitt Street, Waterloo.

During the search officers allegedly located a large amount of heroin with a street value of up to $30,000, as well as cash. As a result, the 34-year-old driver from Breakfast Point and the 45-year-old passenger from Waterloo were arrested and taken to Redfern Police Station for questioning.

The 34-year-old was charged with supply prohibited drug and dealing with the proceeds of a crime. He was bail refused to appear in Central Local Court on Thursday 5 March 2009.

The 45-year-old passenger was charged with supply prohibited drug. He was bail refused to appear at Central Local Court on Tuesday 7 April 2009.

Both men are believed to have a connection with a support group for sufferers of drug addiction.

Police from Strike Force Breckel, established by the Surry Hills RES to investigate the supply of heroin within Sydney, today raided a Breakfast Point home.

During the search, police allegedly located a loaded handgun and ammunition, heroin with an estimated street value of $30,000, anabolic steroids, as well as numerous black balaclavas and gloves.

Inquiries are continuing in relation to the items located and it is likely that further charges will be laid.

Yes police always say oh it was a random traffic stop for not indicating ... or similar ...

Police can search your car if you do ANYTHING that can be used against you like speeding, tail gating , not indicating long enough , and many other excuses.

The police cant just pull you over and search your car but to get around this they say you were speeding or similar so really if police know your car and number plates then its time to sell your car.

My mate has been getting this sort of treatment from police out marrickville and has been pulled over many times for doing nothing wrong and having his car searched and seats taken out the full treatment , he drives a very new black WRX.They confiscated his money which was a few grand because he could not prove where it came from thus he wont get it back even though there were no drugs or similar on him or in the car , so he was not charged but they still took his money.

so the lesson today ... If your a dealer then it's a really good idea to drive a shitbox of a car that police wont look at and stay away from black colors & when they know your car you can easily piss it off and get another car with new plates. If you want to be a gangsta and drive a nice car then dont ever have any drugs or large sums of money on you .. simple.

A black BMW in the Redfern area = please pull me over this car is probably stolen or has drugs in it.

Sorry Kingpin i have trouble understanding the part where u said they took ur mates money. Police CANNOT do that! They have no evidence whatsover to take it. What if u have been saving up for a long time? or u inherited lots of money or u just got a loan off a friend? theres a million possiblities.

If police could do that then this is fucked and legal action has to be done against it to stop this. Over my dead body they would take my hard earned money just like that.

I agree about the black BMW thing:) Pretty obvious. Big drug lords never ever carry drugs with them, they always got people working for them.

$100,000 drug bust

MATT CUNNINGHAM

February 24th, 2009

POLICE have seized more than $100,000 worth of illicit drugs in a raid on a Territory home.

Police said they found more than 1000 ecstasy tablets and 1.67kg of cannabis when they raided the home in Nelson Tce, Alice Springs, just after noon on Saturday.

Supt Lance Godwin said it was believed the drugs had been brought in from Adelaide.

"Through intelligence gathering we are seeing an increase in the number of independent operators who are bringing the drugs into the town from SA," he said.

"As police continue to make these busts we're able to gather further information that will assist us in making more busts."

Police said the ecstasy tablets had a street value of more than $52,000 and the cannabis was worth more than $41,000.

Police have charged a 22-year-old man with possessing a commercial quantity of MDMA, possessing a commercial quantity of cannabis and supplying a commercial quantity of a schedule two substance.

The man was refused bail and will appear in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court this week.

It is the fourth major drug bust by Alice Springs police this year.

The busts have seen police seize more than $500,000 in cannabis and methylamphetamines.

Supt Godwin said people bringing drugs to Alice would be caught.

OK so a couple of days ago somebody, (who is now deleted), said that a civilian found 4100 pills on a side walk. I didn't really believe it but then I was talking to a mate today who said he read up about it in the paper as well, they were white channels and white Nike's and that police were inquiring about it... It was found in a plastic shopping bag on the sidewalk in the CBD.

I am still looking for the info on hard copy on the net somewhere but have not had any luck as of yet, I'll see if I can scrap up a Saturday and Sunday mail from somewhere and find the report, when I do I'll scan it for people so they can read it or refer people to what page it was on and which newspaper...

The reason its not all over the news as much as you would expect is because the police would be doing finger print tests to see if they can locate the owner of the pills and bust their ass.

Whoever the very upset person is who lost their pills would be paranoid to hear police have their drugs and possibly their fingerprints on the bag or worse their DNA... This is why there has not been much on this ... I guess.

The bloke who lost them would have thought some raver would have found and kept them for own use not some goody goody handing it over to the police.

expect an arrest soon I would think ... then we hear all about it...

Damn not looking forward to that day... Got to feel sorry for him though, especially seeing as they were really good pills. Going to feel even worse for him if they catch him because he dropped his/her stash, I don't know how you could misplace that amount though wouldn't you notice as soon as they were gone just about? But anyways not my issue thank god!

It will be interesting to see if any of my dealers go dry for a little while seeing as they were the same presses as what I was getting a little while back... Do you think they would of given the person who found them a reward of some kind?

Also pretty weird number don't you think 4100??? Maybe he took some out to sell for himself... If not it's good to hear there are such honest people still out their willing to do things like this, be interesting to see if he handed in the equal amount of cash to the pills if he found that instead... :\

Cannabis grower denied bail over $500m plantation

Tristan Swanwick

February 24, 2009 04:02pm

A MAN arrested over Queensland's biggest drug haul - a $500 million marijuana plantation east of Goondiwindi - has lost a third bid to obtain bail.

Michael Bennett Gardner Senior was arrested in June last year after police uncovered a massive cannabis plantation on a property near Inglewood.

What was initially thought to be a $42 million haul quickly grew to an estimated $500 million worth as stunned police discovered 34,000 expertly irrigated marijuana plants along with eight metric tonnes of dried cannabis.

Gardner Snr was charged with possession, production and trafficking of cannabis as well as possession of a concealable handgun and $10,000 suspected of being the proceeds of crime.

The accused man was refused bail by a Supreme Court Judge in August 2008, one month after being remanded in custody by the Warwick Magistrates Court.

Lawyers for Gardner Snr lodged an appeal against the ruling and a further bail application in the Queensland Court of Appeal in February, arguing the original judge had erred by placing the onus of proof on their client rather than the Crown.

They argued their client's criminal history was minor and did not include any drug-related offences or any terms of imprisonment.

They said the case against Gardner Snr was circumstantial.

However the Crown argued that the prisoner, if released on bail, would be an unacceptable risk of failing to appear at his trial, committing further offences or interfering with Crown witnesses.

In a judgment handed down today, Justice John Muir dismissed the application for bail and the appeal.

"There is a strong prosecution case that (Gardner Snr) was centrally involved in the production, packaging and distribution of cannabis on a heroic scale," he said.

"The evidence suggests he was the guiding mind of the enterprise."

Justice Muir said the fact a large amount of money, likely to have been made from the illegal operation, was unaccounted for suggested a substantial risk Gardner Snr would fail to appear.

"That conclusion is not diminished by the evidence of weapons, ammunition and devices such as batons, handcuffs and shackles found," he said.

"That evidence, including the evidence of the loaded handgun, give rise to a concern that he was prepared to resort to violence to protect his interests".

Police dismantle alleged eastern suburbs drug dealing racket, two men arrested
Thursday, 26 Feb 2009 01:45pm

Police have smashed an alleged drug distribution operation in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, arresting two men and seizing a large supply of illegal narcotics ready for street-level sale.

In December last year, police from the Redfern Region Enforcement Squad (RES) and Rose Bay Local Area Command began “Operation Connell”, an undercover investigation into the supply of cocaine and other drugs throughout the eastern suburbs.

Around 9.45am yesterday (Wednesday 25 February) officers arrested a 36-year-old man in Paddington and seized dozens of small plastic bags, allegedly filled with cocaine.

Officers also found almost $4,000 cash.

Police later executed search warrants at homes in Paddington and Enmore where they allegedly located another 63 cocaine “deals”, $50,000 and equipment used to package the drugs.

Investigators allegedly seized a total of 150 grams of cocaine, with an estimated potential street value of $67,000.

The Paddington man was taken to the Surry Hills Police Station where he was charged with five counts of supply prohibited drug, possession of a prohibited drug and two counts of goods in custody.

He was denied bail and ordered to appear in the Central Local Court today.

A 32-year-old man from Mascot was also arrested.

He was charged with possess prohibited drug and conditionally bailed to appear in the Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday 18 March.

Police investigations are continuing.
