NEWS: 30.7.09 - Victoria police smash drug ring

VICTORIAN police say they have smashed an international drug importation ring with raids that netted five arrests and $500,000 worth of drugs.

Drug task force detectives and agents from the Australian Crime Commission raided properties in the Melbourne suburbs of Carrum Downs, Richmond, Eltham, Pascoe Vale, Glen Huntly and Elsternwick.

Police said they seized $500,000 worth of drugs including large quantities of cocaine, ecstasy, amphetamine and more than 80 litres of liquid GHB, along with more than $35,000 in cash, a quantity of steroids, a stun gun and a telescopic baton.

The drug ring is believed to have interstate connections, police said.

An Eltham woman, 27, has been charged with a range of offences including trafficking cocaine, possession of cocaine and amphetamines, and possession of the proceeds of crime.

She was remanded in custody pending extradition to NSW on a drug importation charge.

Four others have been bailed to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court at a later date on a host of drugs charges.

They include a 43-year-old Carrum Downs man, a 47-year-old man from Pascoe Vale, a 21-year-old woman from Glen Huntly and a 32-year-old Elsternwick man.

Five arrests after major drug bust in Melbourne

Matthew Schulz

July 30, 2009 07:28pm

UPDATE 8.13pm: POLICE have seized a half-a-million dollars worth of drugs after cracking a syndicate in raids across Melbourne today.

Officers seized a shopping list of drugs worth $500,000 including cocaine, ecstasy, amphetamines and GHB after raids across Melbourne.

Five people were arrested after drug task force detectives alongside Federal investigators swooped in morning raids on seven properties from Melbourne’s northern to southern suburbs.

Three men and two women, all aged between 21 and 47, were charged with drug related offences.

Two of the men were also charged with weapons offences.

Detectives and members of the Australian Crime Commission exercised warrants on homes in Carrum Downs, Richmond, Eltham, Pascoe Vale, Glenhuntly and Elsternwick.

The raids netted a “large quantity” of drugs including cocaine, ecstasy, amphetamine, cannabis, steroids, and more than 80L of liquid GHB or fantasy, all with a street value worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Detectives also seized precursor chemicals used to make drugs, $35,000 cash and weapons including a Taser stun gun and a police-style baton.

Police say the arrests break a syndicate allegedly importing drugs with NSW connections, using intelligence from the Australian Crime Commission, which has a focus on organised crime.

Drug Task Force Det-Inspector Doug Fryer said that the arrests aimed to send a message to criminals that authorities were working more closely than ever to flush them out.

"Operations such as this should send a clear message to crime syndicates that Australian law enforcement is working together and will jointly target anyone who thinks they can break our laws,” Det-Inspector Fryer said.

"Australian law enforcement is no longer bound by jurisdictional borders and Victoria Police and other agencies will aggressively pursue anyone that sees our streets as an easy mark for illicit drug sales.”

Among those arrested include a 43-year-old Carrum Downs man, a 27-year-old woman from Eltham who faces charges in NSW, a 47-year-old Pascoe Vale man, a 21-year-old Glen Huntly woman, and a 32-year-old Elsternwick man.

Garbo 'sold old pills to drug cooks'

11:56a.m. 30th July 2009

| By Christine Flatley

A waste contractor saved old prescription drugs from incineration and sold them to drug "cooks", a court has been told.

Timothy George Valentine, 23, was working at Ace Waste in Brisbane in September 2007 when a fellow employee asked him to put aside the packets of cold and flu tablets, the Supreme Court in Brisbane was told on Thursday.

Valentine agreed and gave his workmate the drugs on 15 separate occasions over a seven month period.

The court was told Valentine, who now works as a forklift driver in Beenleigh, was aware the tablets were being used to produce methylamphetamine.

The court was told he was given between $30 and $50 for each packet of drugs he saved, and that he made $25,000 from the operation between September 2007 and April last year.

He was arrested after police received an anonymous tip-off about the drugs operation at Ace Waste, which is contracted to dispose of waste from organisations including the John Tonge Centre - the state's main criminal forensics lab - and Queensland police.

Valentine pleaded guilty on Thursday to one count of producing a dangerous drug.

He was sentenced to three years' jail, but released immediately on parole.

Sub-machine gun seized

by Henry Tuttiett

Tuesday, July 28, 2009

POLICE have discovered an Uzi automatic sub-machine gun, only the second of its kind ever found in Queensland, in a drug raid at a White Rock home.

Police raided the Kowinka St address and detained two men who were later charged with several drug and firearm related offences.

Police allegedly found 50g of methylamphetamine, about 300 pills believed to MDMA pills and $3000 cash in the raid.

It was only the second time an Uzi has been found by police in the state.

Officers from the drug squad and the property crime squad, acting on a tip-off from the public, raided the Kowinka St address and detained two men who were later charged with several drug and firearms related offences.

Police said it was only the second time a Uzi has been found in Queensland.

Police allege about $3000 in cash, 50g of methylamphetamine or speed and about 300 pills believed to be ecstasy were also found during the raid.

Drug squad Acting Det Sen-Sgt Gary Hunter said police were not expecting to find guns in the raid.

"We knew we were looking for drugs, but probably not the quantity," he said.

"And the guns, you don’t expect to find a Uzi hanging around in someone’s house."

Acting Sen-Sgt Hunter said the drugs were potentially headed for the streets of Cairns.

"We consider this a substantial quantity of drugs," he said.

"These drugs had the potential to be dealt and could have ended up on the streets of Cairns."

A 35-year-old Manunda man yesterday faced Cairns Magistrates’ Court in relation to the raid, charged with supplying a dangerous drug, possession of a dangerous drug, possession of proceeds of crime and possession of things used in a crime.

The case was adjourned and he was remanded in custody.

A second man, 51, will face court on August 19 charged with possession of a dangerous drug, possession of a handgun and possession of drug utensils.

^^^Where the hell would they get an UZI from?

If this was such an easy question to answer then don't you think everybody would have one...:\

Police executed search warrants yesterday around 2pm at residences on Aumuller and Nelson streets at Bungalow where they allegedly located methylamphetamines, cannabis, LSD tablets and money.

I wonder if the LSD tablets were actually micro dots or just tablets with some liccy dropped onto them...

No prison time over ecstasy tablets

BY RACHAEL BRAIN

31/07/2009 9:14:00 AM

AN INVERMAY man who was found with $22,200 worth of ecstasy tablets in his bedroom received a suspended six- month jail sentence yesterday.

Leslie Gordon Pearce, 46, pleaded guilty to trafficking in a controlled substance on the basis that he knew the owner of the 740 ecstasy tablets, or methylamphetamine, intended to sell them.

Pearce also pleaded guilty to using ecstasy and cannabis, possessing a smoking device, cultivating cannabis and using abusive language to a police officer.

In sentencing him in the Launceston Supreme Court yesterday, Chief Justice Ewan Crawford said that Pearce had grown the cannabis for his own use and had used both cannabis and ecstasy the day before police searched his property on January 5.

"The ecstasy tablets were entrusted to him for safekeeping the day before the search," Chief Justice Crawford said.

"The owner intended to sell them, which the accused knew."

Chief Justice Crawford said Pearce was sentenced on "the basis of diminished responsibility" because of a mental health condition.

He suspended Pearce's prison sentence and imposed a three-year good behaviour bond.
