Random breath test Police smell pot Western Sydney

Posted 17/07/2009 at 11:48 AM

Two brothers have faced court while police continue to investigate a sophisticated cannabis-growing operation located in western Sydney.

About 2am yesterday (Thursday 16 July) police from Hawkesbury Local Area Command stopped a car on Stahls Road at Oakville for a random breath test.

Officers from Hawkesbury Local Area Command will allege they noticed a number of 50 kilogram nylon stock feed bags, as well as a strong smell of cannabis coming from the vehicle.

It will be alleged the bags contained a quantity of cannabis leaf and stem, weighing approximately 24 kilograms and with an estimated potential street value of $200,000.

Two brothers were arrested at the scene and taken to Windsor Police Station for questioning.

As a result of further inquiries by Hawkesbury LAC investigators, a search warrant was conducted at a property in Terry Road, Rouse Hill, yesterday afternoon.

Officers found a large shed at the front of the property which allegedly contained 14 rooms each containing drug growing equipment and plants in various stages of maturity.

In total, 274 plants were seized by police during the search, before being destroyed.

The two men, aged 42 and 57, appeared in Penrith Local Court yesterday (Thursday 16 July) charged with drug possession offences.

The 57-year-old was remanded into custody, while the younger brother was released on conditional bail.

Both are due to reappear in the same court on Thursday 30 July. Meanwhile, Hawkesbury LAC detectives are continuing their inquiries into the operation of the hydroponic cannabis house.

Man to front court after Goonellabah drug bust

A 31-year-old Lismore man will face drug-related charges after police allegedly found an elaborate hydroponic system in a house at Goonellabah.

Earlier this week, police seized 72 cannabis plants and just over 2.5 kilos of leaf.

The Richmond local area command's crime manager, Detective Inspector Steve Clark, says the man has been charged with cultivating and supplying an illegal drug and using electricity without authority.

Inspector Clark says the drug growing system stretched through several rooms.

"It's a little more elaborate set-up and certainly one that obviously has had a little bit of time and effort put into it," he said.

"I think this response from the target action group and other police here in the command shows their commitment to chasing drug-related offences."

In a separate arrest, police charged a 45-year-old Wardell man with two drugs offences.

The man has been charged with cultivating a prohibited plant and possession of a prohibited drug.

Man says he was given drugs for fixing cars

July 20th, 2009

A MAN who pleaded guilty to supplying ecstasy tablets told police he was given them for fixing his friends' cars, a court has heard.

Brendon Wekeem, 27, was found with more than 200 ecstasy tablets, some cannabis and speed - or methamphetamine - when his house was raided by police in August last year.

When he was asked why he had 208 ecstasy tablets, he said: "People give them to me for doing jobs for them, like fixing their car."

His lawyer Peter Maley said he was not rebutting the presumption that he had the drugs to supply them to others.

He said that from time to time Wekeem would sell some of the pills to make some money.

Mr Maley said Wekeem had started taking drugs after a marriage breakdown in 2008.

Justice Sally Thomas said she accepted the plea that when Wekeem sold the drugs, he was not conducting a "large enterprise".

She sentenced the painter to two years in prison, fully suspended on a two-year good-behaviour bond.

He was fined $600 for possessing the cannabis and speed.

Ecstasy seizure worries police

Police say they are alarmed at the amount of ecstasy tablets they seized when they arrested a man at Swan Hill at the weekend.

A 19-year-old former Swan Hill man has been bailed to appear in court later this year after officers stopped a car for a routine check on Saturday night and found a large quantity of tablets and cash.

Sergeant Troy Hargaedon from the Swan Hill Divisional Response Unit says says people in small country communities need to pass on information about drugs to police.

"Look, an integral part of any investigation is the assistance we receive from the public, we can't function as a police department if we don't have input from the public - they are our eyes and ears and without their assistance we can't detect these offences and I'd encourage anyone with information to contact us," he said.

'Hard-working' drug runner faces jail

SEAN FEWSTER, COURT REPORTER

July 21, 2009 12:32pm

A WORKAHOLIC businessman who turned to drug running to ease his financial burden now faces a $750,000 fine and 25 years' jail for his crimes.

The District Court has heard Wojciech Nasilowski will also lose his home, two businesses and luxury cars to police, who will seize them as the proceeds of his Adelaide-to-Sydney runs.

The civil engineer and motor mechanic has admitted using his skills to build secret compartments into his car and his sister's home for drug trafficking.

He has also confessed to creating an armory - including a bolt-action rifle, a pump-action shotgun and handguns - to protect his crop.

Today David Waye, for Nasilowski, insisted his client was neither "menacing" nor connected with "unlawful organisations".

Rather, he was a hard-working husband and father who made a very poor business decision.

"He has suffered personal shame and ostracism through this humbling experience," he said.

"He feels he has betrayed all he has done and stood for in his 55 years."

Nasilowski, 55, of Gould Creek, was arrested at Tailem Bend in March 2007 after police found 58 one-pound bags of cannabis, a total of 26kg, in a secret compartment in the floor of his van.

A subsequent search of his properties - and the home of his sister, Dana Sky - found drug crops secreted in refrigerators, behind hidden panels and in concealed rooms.

Police located enough drugs for 30,000 street deals.

Today, the court heard Sky - who has also been charged - had "little to no involvement" with the drug business.

Mr Waye said his client operated both Twilight Motors mechanics and Paragon Constructions, but turned to trafficking after losing money to a former business associate.

He said Nasilowski had learned the drug trade in 1998 when he made a botched attempt to transport drugs interstate on behalf of a Twilight employee.

"In addition to any penalty this court imposes, he faces the catastrophic punishment of having his home, businesses and cars seized," he said.

Judge Michael Boylan will sentence Nasilowski and Sky on a date to be set.

Three teens fined for drug possession

21/07/2009 12:20:00 PM

Three teenagers have been fined in Taree Local Court after they were found with illegal drugs.

The court heard 19-year-olds David William Sheather and Shawn Mills, both from Wherrol Flat Road, Wherrol Flat, and 18-year-old Aaron Paul Hardy from Farquhar Street, Wingham, were caught with cannabis at 10.15pm on June 12 when police saw their vehicle parked on Manning River Drive at Taree South.

The bonnet to the vehicle was up and the occupants looked as though they were fixing something near the engine.

Officers then sighted a foil of cannabis on the ground near the car.

Hardy admitted the foil was his. He said he had thrown it on the ground when he saw police approaching. The foil contained four grams of cannabis.

Police then searched Mills. They found 1.6 grams of cannabis in his left pocket. He told police he had bought the drugs for $10.

Sheather was found with pair of scissors in his pocket. The scissors appeared to have cannabis resin on the blade. Sheather admitted to smoking cannabis earlier in the day and told police he had intended to smoke the drugs they found with his friends.

All three pleaded guilty in Taree Local Court to possessing a prohibited drug.

Hardy was fined $200, while Mills and Sheather were fined $300 each. All three were ordered to pay $76 in court costs.
