My mom has taken name brand Klonopin for a decade or more. Its getting expensive though and she wants to get generic but is afraid of bad side effects. Shouldn't she be ok?

Why do people not understand that brand and generic is EXACTLY the same stuff. 500mg Paracetamol branded is EXACTLY the same as 500mg generic. There's so many strict guidelines generic drugs have to pass to be safe for the public.

If she has any negative side effects it'll be placebo and in her head.

I always thought they were the same. She says her doctor acts like it's different when she mentions trying generic.

You wanna know why he acts different? It's because the USA is so fucked up doctors get paid more for pushing expensive branded drugs which normal people can't afford and this is the outcome.

People scared to change to cheaper alternatives because they'll think they'll drop dead of the cheaper alternative.

Yeah generics are legally required to have the same active ingredients as regular Klonopin

There is zero difference whatsoever between brand and generic for any drug. Pharmacies, insurance componies, and sometimes doctors, will often recommend brand because it supports big pharmaceutical corporations who make it. There's literally no difference at all, except the fillers and binders, which have no effect on your brain or body when taking it orally. Now, if it was a brand containing multiple drugs vs. Generic containing only one, that would be different, but klonopin doesn't come in any pills containing other drugs. An example of this would be percocet (oxycodone and acetominophen) vs. Generic oxycodone. Tell her to just buy the generic

Yes, the generics have the same strengths. The one and only exception I've ever found was that Mylan's valium is very subpar. The pills crumble easily, and are horrible if you need to split doses and taper off from it. I have no idea about Klonopin. Never took that one. It's just that Mylan (the manufacturer of many benzos) has been getting some heat for their quality. Their Klonopin may be ok, though. Their Ativan is of good quality.

This isnt true. Doctors often are convinced by the drug reps to prescribe the new expensive drugs without generics available but largely the practice of paying doctors for script writing volume has ended (there are ways to get paid as a doctor but its no longer write X amount of scripts and we will buy you a Porsche type thing) and no one is getting paid to prescribe the brand drug if a generic is available.

Now, we do not allow brand/generic discussion and am closing.
