I am a chronic pain sufferer. I am currently on MSContin 75mg 3x a day and percocet10/325 for break through pain with right now I don't have any percocets as I'm waiting for the referral to the clinic. My Dr wants me to go to a suboxone clinic as I have a high tolerance to opiates/opioids and does not want me to become addicted. She stated that suboxone/subutex will work well for me but I am scared. We tried methadone and I had a severe reaction to it. For those who are on i or have been on it can you tell me your experience? How long will/can a person generally be on them for chronic pain? My fear is having another reaction like I did with methadone and what will the next step be if this does happen or if it does not help me? I personally don't like narcotics and fear addiction. My chronic pain is undiagnosed (fibromyalgia ruled out) after seeing over 8 specialists in different fields and countless blood and many xray/CT/MRI testing. I'm at my wits end and hoping that maybe someone on here is going through the same thing and can give me some insight. Thank you.

^Errgh, you sound like me. I'm a chronic pain sufferer who as of the day before yesterday was taking 200-400mgs of oxycodone split into 2 doses daily and I was completely tolerant to those doses and no longer got even mild to moderate pain relief so I bit the bullet and went to a sub clinic on Friday, skipped my evening dose of oxy and had a suboxone film under my tongue Saturday morning, 6mgs was all I took yesterday and I felt better than I had in a long time.

Because it's been so long since I got any "reward" in the form of pain relief or any high as such, it made sense to jump onto subs at less than a third of the price I was forking out on oxycodone per month.

Well today is my second day on suboxone and this morning I dosed 10mgs and I'll see what it does for me throughout the day. The transition from oxy to suboxone was seamless no word of a lie. If my pain isn't improved I'll go up as high as I can dose wise but diminishing returns may negate the need to, don't know yet. Good luck and take care.

Thanks SKR. I have been on narcotics for years but never experienced any type of high people talk about except when I was given an injection of Demerol. I have a very high tolerance which make prescribing medication difficult. What I am on now is the strongest prescription I have been on excluding emergency room and surgery meds.

Do you know how long you will be taking the suboxone? Since the pain has been diagnosed as chronic I don't think it will go away until they find what is causing the pain. How often do you take the film? Is it only on the onset of pain or is it a around the clock method? I'm trying to get information so I am prepared when I finally do get to be able to go to the clinic. It's hard to function when the pain is constant and I will not ask my Dr for anything else to help. The funny thing is my occupation is as a pharmacy technician but I am unable to work due to the pain. I honestly don't know how much longer I can take the pain as I am barely sleeping and on top of it once I do get in I will still have to wait as my insurance requires a prior authorization for what ever they are going to put me on. I'm not sure what state you are in as I am in California, but I will call a suboxone clinic to see if I can just walk in for at least a consult. Thank you and take care.

Hey there, SKR & I are both in australia so things may be a little different to Cali.

I switched to subutex & suboxone around six mths ago after being on opiates for many years. Finally becoming a one gal circus I had so many ups & downs & wd regularly. It's been of help with both pain & peace of mind.

I've never heard of a dr recommending a sub clinic though, even if you do have a high tolerance. Is this a regular dr or are you in PM?

Bupe patches are available if your dr thinks that may help your pain. Have you tried opiate rotation? IMO your dr is scared as many in the states are & wants to wash his hands of you.

Also, you say fibro has been ruled out? I'm curious to know how & I'm sure others here would too as there's no test or even clinical findings that would rule it out. Unless your pain was say, only in your left elbow.

Ask your dr why he feels sub rather than bupe patches would be helpful? I have posted a bit about low dose naloxone helping Cpp's, perhaps it's the addition of this.

I'd be very mindful about turning to maintenance for pain, if it doesn't help your type of pain then it's very unlikely any dr will ever prescribe you opiates again.

Best of luck,

Rtp
