Robotripping in Japan: Is it even legal?

I plan on going to Japan very soon and I want to robotrip in Kyoto, but I don't know if it is legal or illegal. What would the Japanese people think of me if they found out I was drinking cough syrup? Would they think I am weird? Don't tell Billy Benjamin that I posted this, cause he'll beat me up/
