Rise of the synthetic-high zombies: Cops across Florida called to 'horror-movie style scenes' where groups of people are left slumped and stupefied after taking 'spice'

Authorities in several Florida cities have seen an increase in emergency calls related to people being slumped over in a stupefied state, as they have overdosed on the dangerous drug known as spice, or synthetic marijuana.

Police in Tampa say that more people than ever before are overdosing on the drug, as investigators in Clearwater say they've received dozens of calls for people who have had to be rushed to the hospital because of suspected spice use.

WTVT reported that Tampa medical and law enforcement professionals warned last week about the dangerous uptick in overdoses that is possibly linked to a bad batch of spice that's being sold.

A disturbing photo (above) taken at Crest Lake Park shows two people slumped over and one person laying on the ground, as it's suspected they had used Spice. Authorities in Clearwater and Tampa say number of spice users has increased

According to officials, there were three overdoses on Wednesday, as the calls for the usage of Spice are centered around Crest Lake Park where homeless people spend a lot of time reportedly.

A disturbing photo from the Clearwater Police Department taken at Crest Lake Park shows two people slumped over and one person laying on the ground, as it's suspected they had used Spice.

In addition, a video taken at the same park on Wednesday by Major Eric Gandy of the Clearwater Police Department shows him trying several times to speak to unresponsive individuals about how long ago they had taken spice.

'What's your name?' Gandy can be heard asking several times on the video.

Eventually, one of the men responds by saying, 'my name?'

'The spike that we're seeing and my personnel are dealing with on the road are unprecedented,' Gandy told WFLA. 'Looked like one of our zombie movies.'

He added that he 'had 15 people walking around in various states of incapacitation'.

Resident Jerome Freeland, 29, told Mail Online that he walks by Crest Lake Park daily when he takes his dog for a walk or heads to the welding and fabricating business he owns.

'It's mainly the homeless people that are using this drug,' Freeland claims, as he believes they are using something stronger than spice called 'That Disney' or 'FloKKA'.

'They go buy this drug with money that people give them and then go sit around our parks and other places.

'They are zombified homeless people on drugs and I've seen people fall out around my place from the usage of it.'

Freeland added that business owners around him constantly go out to provide water to people who appear to be on spice, 'so they won't get too sick and die.'

He explained that he's witnessed people who have used the drug in the area become 'violent' and attack others.

Freeland's account of violent behavior exhibited by spice users coincides with what investigators say is happening.

According to WTVT, officers have encountered violent individuals, as well as those having convulsions and several who are just completely unresponsive.

'We have noticed a serious uptick of Spice incidents lately that have turned into medical calls and it's become a serious drain on resources for the police department for the fire department and then in turn for doctors say at Morton Plant Hospital where the patients end up,' police spokesman Rob Shaw told WTVT.

Authorities say they are trying to find a solution to the increase of spice-related cases, as they are teaming up to work on a solution to fix the problem. Above seized packages of spice are being examined by Florida officials

'You wonder when somebody's going to have a heart attack and die from some of these substances.'

The St. Petersburg Police Department said dispatchers answered several calls for individuals needing medical assistance as it's suspected they may have had extreme reactions to spice in the last few days.

Officers in that area suspect that people near the St. Vincent DePaul Shelter were using it, but are conducting lab tests to confirm.

Police say the people who are making the synthetic drug are changing the ingredients, which means that users have no idea what they are smoking.

Authorities say they are trying to find a solution to the increase of spice-related cases, as they are teaming up to work on a solution to fix the problem.

The area of Daytona Beach I was living in was filled with Flak' monsters. They walked with very jerky, Twitchy, robotic movements. Often gesticulating wildly, while rambling incoherent jibberish. I had one walk up to me and start clicking and grunting like she was speaking that Khosian "click language". She was staring me down with the most intense and wild eyed look as she moved closer and closer up on me. Her head was rocking back and forth on a pivot like a bobble head doll and her body rolled like she was trying to pop and lock dance up on me but in reality she just couldn't control her movements. She then raised both of her arms out to simulate bird wings and hooked both of her hands like claws as she flapped and cawed at me. For a moment I thought I was going to have to push her away or get in a confrontation because she was getting so close and intimidating. She than stopped and said "Longitudinal fortitude. Major municipalities can't handle the feline over population. The word for the day is CONJUNCTIVITUS. The city is teeming with it" and then popped and locked off just as quick as she came. In the area I lived in this was a normal everyday encounter.

Two things: contender for the worst journalism ever.

MDMB/MMB-CHMINACA.

A lot of my friends back in syracuse that were trying to get jobs that required drug tests ended up turning from cannabis to spice. When they got the jobs they were unable to transition back to cannabis. They had become hooked on spice, and I have one friend that was a very promising mechanic who cannot function without it. What scares me for this guy as that he started out when it was known substances like JWH and the like, but now it can be anything. His mom told me she is just waiting for the day it kills him or he does something crazy enough to be thrown in jail. Her an I told a few stories about some of the crazy things he has said and done while using spice. This drug is no joke and is just a product of prohibition.

I knew a couple that consisted of a young trailer trash chick and a loser criminal on probation and they were huge spiceheads and a bit too out there. I don't know if it was the spice but I think the shit made them a bit weird.

Statements that drug X is ruining people's lives? Check.
Claims that usage is spiralling out of control? Check.
Odd, scary-sounding names for drugs? Check.
Police are unable to handle this? Check.
Asking random people who know nothing about drugs their opinions as if it meant something? Check.

Boy, this article has everything that a typical drug scare fear-mongering article should have.

To the layman that has never experienced spice this would be terrifying. I have experienced it first hand and that stuff is no joke. They need to just let people enjoy a little pot when they like so this stuff doesn't get ahold of more people.

Sure, it is the same tired, worn out style of drug reporting, but that first picture really does speak a thousand words.

I have to respectfully disagree with this.
The picture shows three young people who are tired and worn out after volunteering all day in the hot sun. They built houses for stray dogs or maybe homeless people.
Or, maybe they were drinking alcohol - that terrible drug that robs so many lives from us, unlike spice. Alcohol can make people look really messed up.
Or, maybe they just found out that their friend is terribly sick. They are reeling emotionally from the news.

My point is that the picture doesn't tell us if they used spice. It tells us almost nothing, actually.
But, it certainly fits in with the motifs of the article - fear and ignorance.

Agree, the caption underneath the photo says.....
it's suspected they had used Spice

Fear mongering at it's worst

People are getting, like, high? In parks, in Florida, on sunny days with friends?

I'm going to try to get some sleep tonight, but I fear serenity may elude me for some time after this terrifying news.

Just to be clear, I'm not trying to make light of cases where people end up in dire straits. But we all know that's always a possibility, especially with garbage, as most spice seems to be. On any given night, there are fights on the street outside my building, occasionally the sound of a window breaking, couples swearing at each other. But we all know why that is. That's when the bars close. No news reports about all that.

I am happy to say I was purchasing jwh-018 in a relatively pure form back in 2010 had my fun with it and stopped in 6 months. After the ban and when I couldnt get weed I tried some random gas station garbage and hated it. That series of events pretty much set the tone for RCs for me and I got out with the first generation of them.

I fully understand how some people can enjoy it and only hope that it may not be as bad as it seems, especially down the road when we all inevitably care. It happens at some point and you can only hope you dont carry around too many lasting scars of a past you'd rather forget.

Addiction does have a shelf life. The shelf life isn't when you stop, but when you realize you need to stop.

Whatever happened to them, they look FUBAR to me.

I'm probably overly cynical, but it looks put on, if I'm being honest. I mean, it's not hard to give some people a few bucks and say: "Ok, can you look sort of zombified for me? Yeah, lay down, that's good. You, don't lay down, just slouch over."

I mean, that's kind of what the pic looks like to me.

people nodding off on heroin rebranded as spice addicts.

Because reporting about heroin is so yesterday

"Longitudinal fortitude. Major municipalities can't handle the feline over population. The word for the day is CONJUNCTIVITUS. The city is teeming with it"
That is beautifully poetic.
God, i'd have been impressed to make a bluelight post that eloquent at the depths of some of my depraved moments :)

Yeah I had the original formula "K2" back in Texas in 2010, before the DEA stepped in on the matter.

I didn't even think that JWH-018 was that good (at all), and that was supposedly one of the best synthetic cannabinoids. Who the hell knows what spice is nowadays. The fact that people choose that drug over one of the best drugs on earth (cannabis) baffles me to this day....I mean, I do understand why, but still....
