sure he's made some blockbuster popcorn fun trash, but he's made some good'ns. true romance is a fave of mine.

British film director Tony Scott, known for such Hollywood blockbusters as "Top Gun," "Days of Thunder," "Beverly Hills Cop II" and "The Taking of Pelham 123," jumped to his death Sunday from the Vincent Thomas Bridge spanning San Pedro and Terminal Island, according to Los Angeles County coroner's officials.

Scott, 68, climbed a fence on the south side of the bridge's apex and leapt off "without hesitation" around 12:30 p.m., according to the Coroner's Department and port police.

That's a sad story. RIP.

Brother of Prometheus director Ridley, Scott had often worked with Denzel Washington on films including recent hit Unstoppable, Man on Fire, Deja Vu and The Taking of Pelham 1,2,3.
An action specialist, Scott also steered The Last Boy Scout, Days of Thunder, Beverly Hills Cop II and True Romance.
He ran a production company, Scott Free, with Ridley.

Scott was scheduled to direct a Top Gun sequel and had an African refugee drama, Emma’s War, in production.
Top Gun, starring Tom Cruise, was one of the highest-grossing films of 1986. The pair worked together again four years later on the hit Days of Thunder.

or maybe he was forced to watch "Days Of Thunder".

Damn thats mean RIP

"Water's wet, the sky is blue......and old Satan Claus, Jimmy, he's out there, and he's just getting stronger."

RIP. :(

Rest in peace Tony.

He did make some trash movies that is true. But he made some good ones as well. The first time I ever got stoned I went and watched Man on Fire and I really enjoyed it. Crimson Tide was pretty good as well.

Thanks for the memories. You will be missed :(

i remember catching a 70mm print of days of thunder at an old cinema that no longer exists. my young teenage mind just soaked in his extreme close ups and lightning cutting and was drenched in atmosphere. sure many of his films are hokey, but he had a good sense of style.

the walken/hopper scene in true romance is one of the best film scenes ever imo.

True Romance has been my favourite film since I first saw when I was 16.

R.I.P

he was a pretty big producer as well. prometheus was disturbing. :sus:

Supposedly he had been diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer.

I think this was confirmed - he wanted to end his life on his own terms. Aside from True Romance, I'm not a fan, but I can respect his decision - better to burn out than fade away.

Apparently now the "Inoperable Cancer" thing is false according to Tony's wife. So that leaves one of two possibilities - he had an immense debt to the mob, or the shame from directing Top Gun was too much to bear.

Suicide is often impulsive. For all we know, he'd had a bad night already and just felt like doing it. In any event, we're left with a dead body and no answers.

Time for some Camus.

if only more people who directed shitty films would top themselves.
i guess the headline 'michael bay dead after gnawing through his wrists' is too much to hope for.

Tony Scott directed some shitty films, but I don't think he was a shitty director. Michael Bay, on the other hand, IS a shitty director.

i wouldn't go so far as calling it blasphemy, but they really are like comparing apples with ... like really shitty apples.

i like top gun. flame on. i cry every time moose dies. or was that goose... oh whatevs, he was a nerd anyway.

point taken, and i still enjoy true romance.
but please god make michael bay kill himself. amen.
