If you loved the book as much as me the movies were just bland. Not comparable to the star cast and directing of LoTR trilogy. The answer to your question is the water-logged Hollywood requirement to turn anything and everything into at least a trilogy if not a saga.

I thought it must be like 80% filler. Did they just make up a whole bunch of scenes or something?
It's a shame really. It could have made a great 2 hours movie.
I loved the book. When I was 10 my teacher spent an hour each day reading it to us because she loved it so much as a kid.

this. for example there's an entire story arch about an orc chief that doesn't even exist in the book.
