Hey all.
So, IV administration of a lot of the drugs in the *codone family (Codeine, Hydrocodone, and others) is contraindicated, due to the histamine release (which is much higher than the morphone family) having a very high chace of causing pulmonary edema.
Two questions:
1. What is the exact mechanism that causes the much higher risk factor compared to the morphones? Why does the changed 3-position have this effect, or is it because of some other change?
2. Why is Oxycodone not contraindicated in this way?
Cheers!
