Prisoners launch drug rehab protest on roof of Queensland jail

Two prisoners have taken to the roof of Queensland’s Woodford Correctional Centre, to protest for access to drug rehabilitation.

The men climbed on top of the building at 9am yesterday, refusing to come down and making demands for a program to combat drug addiction.

A ‘Code Silver’ was initiated at the jail when the protest began.

Among the men’s demands was a request to speak with A Current Affair host Tracy Grimshaw.

It is understood the pair accessed the roof by cutting through a fence with toenail scissors.

Two prisoners are bailed up on the roof of a jail and demanding to speak to A Current Affair host Tracy Grimshaw.
The pair are protesting because they want a drug dependence treatment program introduced to the prison to be introduced at the prison, in Brisbane, Queensland.
The alarm was raised about 9am on Tuesday after the men said they wanted the program.

They were still on the roof about 6.30pm the same day.
The Courier Mail reported jail staff were monitoring them by using spotlights.

They got to the roof after using toenail scissors to cut through a fence, it was reported.
A spokesperson at the facility told Daily Mail Australia they had no comment on the matter.

Prisoners climb down from roof of Queensland jail after 24-hour protest

Two prisoners have climbed down from the roof of Queensland’s Woodford Correctional Centre, after spending 24 hours protesting for access to a drug rehabilitation program.

The men climbed on top of the building at 9am yesterday, and made a series of demands including wanting to speak with A Current Affair host Tracy Grimshaw.

The protest appeared to be centred around a demand for access to a drug rehabilitation program, with the men seen holding a banner reading "Suboxone program".

Police, paramedics and fire crews were called to the jail, and the men climbed down about 9am today and surrendered to waiting, heavily armed police officers.

This morning, Grimshaw told the TODAY Show she only found out about the demand after reading about it online.

"It hit the news websites last night, and that's when I became aware of it," she said.

"I have had no official approach from any of the authorities up there as you would imagine."

Grimshaw said she assumed the prisoners were just using her name in a bid to get attention.

"I would say that these guys have got on a roof and they want to make some noise and they pulled my name out of a hat," she said.

"If that's a precondition for them getting off the roof they should get off the roof now, because it's not going to happen.

"I certainly have had no contact from any of the authorities."

It is understood the men accessed the roof by cutting through a fence with toenail scissors.

Suboxone is a prescription medicine used to treat heroin and other opioid drug addictions.
