Nicotine will give you calm and clarity simultaneously once you are hooked. At first, it gives you a "buzz", then quickly changes to that relaxing clarity. It has definite mental effects... psychoactivity.

The fact that those effects are easily included in your normal, productive, life (actually improving and enhancing it, actually) is what makes it so insidious. Mark Twain was convinced that he could not write without it. Milder and more manageable psychoactive effects are psychoactive effects nonetheless.

If you don't think that nicotine directly affects your brain, why would a smoker get much of what he wants from nicotine gum? Yeah, you still miss that ritual and that is part of it, but the unfamiliar consumption method does tick most of the boxes.
