I have recently got into nootropics and been trying to learn about them. I saw an article recently that said something like the substance I was reading about (I think it was phenibut) has been researched in Russia but not in America so it's not included in medical things. They said they won't go into the politics of it and it got me thinking. I don't really understand world politics well but is medical research shared and why are nootropics not very widely known? Sorry if this makes me seem dumb.

Thank you for reading.

Is that phenibut, the phenylated GABA analog used for promoting sleep and treating anxiety in Russia? if that’s the one you’re talking about, it was actually given to Russian astronauts as it’s safe and much less addictive than traditional GABA drugs like benzodiazepines. i’m not really sure I would call it a nootropic as I don’t think it enhances cognition or memory directly. however, by reducing stress and anxiety, as well as promoting sleep, it certainly has potential to improve cognitive performance or help maintain the mental stability needed for difficult tasks.

Yes it was either that or memantine. Phenibut can be addicting as it works on GABA (like GHB and alcohol). I had it in powder form years ago and remember learning that.

Both Phenibut and memantine alter brain activity and neuronal excitability in very different ways and May impair memory acutely. however, for people suffering from anxiety and poor sleep or Alzheimer’s related pathology, phenibut and memantine can at least temporarily address The symptoms that prevent one from performing to their best ability. True Nootropics/cognitive enhancers are things like the racetams, but then again, they would probably only work in people with actual memory impairment linked to defective or slow LTP and in healthy people without anxiety or depression.

Thank you for the good information. I also do have piracetam and noopept (the racetams) and would like to learn more about them. I have only taken small amounts a couple of separate times of both. So far I notice the brain enhancement like better concentration and clearer thinking but they don't help with depression at all and I found myself feeling rather sad and unhappy on them. I was wondering could you take a small amount of the racetam with phenibut or picamilon to help with energy.

Yes, perhaps you could give it a try. however, I would advise you avoid long term racetam and instead, try something like sulbutiamine and acetyl LCarnitine as these have shown considerable antidepressant affects which they achieve via enhancement of the dopaminergic system/Dopamine receptor signalling.

Thank you for letting me know. They seem a bit depressing to take so not sure the racetam will be a good idea. I looked up sibutramine as it sounded familiar and I was on that years ago (like maybe 15 years ago) for weight loss but it was eventually made illegal here (or not available at least on prescription) here in Australia. I remember it had bad effects on me like bad circulation as in freezing cold hands/extremities and a red hot face/cheeks. I even saw a heart specialist at that time for my symptoms and he said to get off the sibutramine. That is interesting though as I remember I liked being on it mentally. The other one I was on after that for a while is Edronax which affects the adrenaline system. I would try that again. I will look into L Carnitine - thanks for the tip.

Yesterday I bought the herb saffron and white tea to make saffron tea as I read that was good for depression and it gave me energy after I took it in the afternoon I thought. I will keep taking that but took phenibut today as it's been a week since I took it.

Well... I've been taking a couple of nootropics for my mental heath, but I'm not really sure if they work. I take Mucuna Pruriens extract 1000mg. and also 5-HTP 100mg for my brain heath, but I'm not too sure if they have any real value. What do you think ?

I’m not sure what the plant extract you take does for the brain, I’ll do some research on that soon. 5HTP is a direct precursor to serotonin so it would probably only be beneficial if you have a serotonin deficiency. although 5HTP is touted as a natural and healthy alternative to SSRI antidepressants, I think that’s quite misleading as it does exactly what those drugs do, elevate Brain serotonin. therefore, it can have many of the same side-effects as SSRI antidepressants if taken at sufficient doses.
