Non-Fiction Reading List

ML -- hell yeah!!
Foucault is the patron saint of my MA program at school (along with Edward Said and Jacques Derrida).
:)

Origins of Virtue by Matt Ridley
Silent Power by Stuart Wilde
Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins

These are all good reads... if you're interested in that type of stuff.

Also, Radical Honesty by Brad something

Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance is an absolutely marvelous book ... I second its recommendation. Seeing Richard Dawkins mentioned here before Hunter S. Thompson is somewhat surprising. I treasure Dawkins ... just didn't calculate that many here would be familiar w/ his work.

bill bryson's travel books are great. his american, english and australian ones in particular. i learnt more about my country from his book than any number of school lessons and it is genuinely hilarious. he also clearly loves language and uses fantastic old words just for the fuck of it

Every bone in my body screams at me to hate Bryson, unfortunately he is alltogether too readable, can't ge enough, especially of his language stuff. His latest book, A SHort History of Almost Everything is fantastic, I highly recommend it, a fascinating journey through the history of science. Now, if only I could get my no good brother to return my copy... :X

Also, dunno whether its been mentioned here but Noam Chomsky's new book 'Hegemony or Survival' is well worth the read. I just started it and am enjoying it immensely.

The Teacup and the Universe
-talks about mathematical patterns found in nature and a
few mathematical theories

Nature's Numbers
-talks about many of the puzzling mathematical patterns
found in nature, etc

The Joy of Pi
-I've just begun it but it goes into the history and
theories behind pi in addition to why it's one of the only
mathematical problems of the past still haunting the
present.
