New Chewing Gum Offers Caffeine Boost

Starting next month, a new gum from Wrigley will offer more than something to chew on. One piece of Alert Energy Caffeine Gum packs 40 milligrams of caffeine, about as much as a half of a cup of coffee or a whole dark chocolate bar.

Targeted at adults ages 25 to 49, the company believes the “bitter taste, hexagonal pellet, primary packaging and premium price point” are what will differentiate it in the market.

The idea for Alert started when Wrigley was looking for ways to expand its line to “functional and ‘occasion-based’ reasons to chew.”
Wrigley, the company behind brands like Orbit, Eclipse, Juicy Fruit and Altoids, is taking care with its product marketing. Advertising geared toward adults and a warning label on the package are attempts to keep the gum out of the hands of kids.

Available in fruit or mint flavors, one pellet contains five calories and 2 grams of sugar alcohols. Priced at $2.99 for an eight-pellet pack, Alert can be found in select stores and will become available nationwide this summer.

Here in Japan, we have had caffeinated chewing gum for 30 years.
I really like it, since I don't have to stop somewhere to get a coffee or tea, and it is easier than drinking coffee after a full meal for my stomach.
Unfortunately, it doesn't say how much caffeine each stick contains (?!?), despite that being the point of the gum.
But I would estimate it at about 60 mg, or the equivalent of a cup of black tea (or about half a cup of strong coffee).
It also costs about US $1 for a pack of 9 sticks, which is far cheaper than Wrigley's new gum (and far cheaper - per mg caffeine - than coffee or tea that you buy in vending machines, let alone in cafes).
Also, it keeps its mint flavor for a really long time. Literally hours. Until it begins to taste like poison at the end.

ThinkGeek has sold this kind of stuff to the discerning caffeine consumer in the North Americas for a while, too. It's not a new idea.

^ Omg, so awesome--thank you. :3
$15 shipping was so expensive.. so I bought $40 worth of stuff. Lol. It's good, right?!?

It's not a new idea right, but wrigley is the biggest gum company on the planet. Wrigley already has a caffeinated gum and has been selling it to the military for years. Personally I think the gum is way overpriced.

Yeah the gum is definitely overpriced. Its really gimmicky, like 5-hour energy. I don't think it'll pose much of a problem but it is a step closer to caffeinated candy, which might pose a risk.

That shit tastes weird, I mean, I didn't dislike it, but it's not really suited for the American palate. I think we might have talked about this before though.

I prefer caffeinated beverages, in any case.

Well, coffee and tea have lots of antioxidants, and the gum has highly processed sugars or wanna-be sugars (xylitol), so it is clearly the drinks that win for health, hands down. Since health is important to me, I try to get my fix from tea and coffee whenever possible. But Blackblack is sure convenient!
