it's fucked up they still call em esctacy in the papers though, people come across them and assume they're good because the news said they were...

Then at the end of the article they say 'other dangerous pills' and list pipe designs... ARGH! It's like they KNOW but are withholding the info!

Any pressed tablet that is not pharmaceutical is considered ecstasy these days. A rare news story would be 'Pills found containing only MDMA'

I am not gonna lie I would have bought an obama pill even if I knew it was BZP, just to hang on my wall.
 
Guatemala Seizes 9.9 Million PseudoEphedrine Tablets

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Guatemalan authorities have confiscated nearly 10 million pseudoephedrine pills worth $33 million in a record seizure of the precursor chemical for methamphetamine.

Police spokesman Donald Gonzalez says the 9.9 million pills were seized Tuesday at Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala's main port on the Pacific coast.

The Attorney General's Office says information from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration led to the seizure. The pills arrived in a ship coming from India.

Gonzalez called it the biggest seizure of methamphetamine precursor chemicals in Guatemala.

Central American officials say drug cartels are increasingly smuggling in pseudoephedrine through their region to get around a Mexican ban in imports of the chemical.

Token raids like this should be seen as what they are usually: one cartel using LEO to take out rivals.

I am surprised that they managed to keep the facts relatively in check. India is one of the main if not the main manufacturer of Pseudoephedrine, and Mexican crank cartels really do use CentralAmerica as a shipping point.

$30 million for a few hundredk grams of PSE seems very steep, especially coming directly from the plant.

I find this part the most troubling:

The gangs are also ferrying military-style weapons north into Mexico to fight Calderon's forces and opposing gangsters while also vying to take over street sales in Guatemala. Some of the weapons are left over from the wars that the United States helped fight in Central America -- including here in Guatemala, which is still recovering from its 36-year civil war.

"They're looking for new areas," said the U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to comment on the matter. "They need a place where they can operate with impunity."

That last bit really bothers me. Decades of US imposed proxy wars to pit nationalist zealot militarists and paramilitary extremists against the democratically elected Socialist governments of Central America/South America only to complain later on of another group of well-armed, well financed imperialists with an agenda trying to use the same area after we abandoned it? (no need to pump more money in the jungle, the USSR broke up, Communism isn't so scary anymore).
