Australian backpacker Rye Hunt has been spotted alive after he disappeared 12 days ago in Rio de Janeiro.
A man was seen by a fisherman on an island in Brazil and police are working to verify his identity.
Mr Hunt, from Hobart, swam to uninhabited Cotunduba Island, off the coast of Copacabana where he was last seen on CCTV, after taking drugs at a party and suffering a psychotic episode, Brazilian police spokesperson Elen Souto said.
Initially they took the drug diluted in water at the hotel and inhaled it before going to the Roots of Lapa party.
At the party, they inhaled the drug again but this time mixed it with vodka.
After taking the drug, witnesses said the pair thought they were being followed and someone was trying to kill them. They were then thrown out of the venue.
Ms Souto said on Wednesday he was spotted by a fisherman on Cotunduba Island.
'[Mr Hunt] was injured by sea creatures, asking for water and when he was asked how he arrived on the island he said he had swum there and that he was Australian,' she said.
'In addition to that information, we carried out searches on Monday and Tuesday through a maritime group in Botafogo, which searched around Cotunduba Island, and yesterday, Tuesday, a fire service rescue team carried out searches on the island, which in inhabitable.'
Ms Souto said on Wednesday Mr Hunt had only spent a brief time on the island and it was a short swim to nearby Leme beach, which is less than two kilometres away.
Police continue to search for him after they received a call from the fisherman on Monday, saying he had seen a man who matched the description of Mr Hunt.
