Meth On foil runner: details on lighter distance

So, using a foil runner, I've become terrified of burning it, as it's easy to do. (Note: my definition of burning, it starts to bubble, tastes off, and the crackback gets a yellow/brown tinge). I've been trying to find a happy medium for flame distance, because I hold it TOO far away, and it wastes lighters and time. I find that I *can* get it to run with even about 5 inches between the very end of the flame and the foil. Any tips?

Use quality foil like Reynolds brand. Also use the flame in a sweeping motion.

^ Yep, the cheaper it is, the thinner it will be, hence it will burn faster..
