Medical Heroin Works to Beat Opioid Addiction

wow, medical heroin?
that just blows my mind.

"the historical legacy of heroin"
damn straight.

However, there were more serious adverse events in the diacetylmorphine group — 51 versus 18. None of the adverse events in the methadone group was attributed to the study treatment.

The most common serious adverse events with diacetylmorphine treatment were potentially life-threatening overdoses in 10 patients and seizures in six. None of the patients died.

How does Heroin/diacetylmorphine cause seizures?

Medical heroin maintenance is clearly the best answer for some. Not for all, for sure. But for some it is the only effective treatment that allows addicts to function at reasonable levels and actually get the chance to lead a productive life rather than barely existing on the fringes of society.

wow. so.. I am not sure I understand. how can an opiate that is MORE pure help you get through an addiction to opiates ?? can somebody enlighten me on this. besides the fact of injecting myself I am not the fond of. :/

The level of purity of the opiate aint got nothing to do with this. The whole point of this study is that the negative effects of addiction comes from the lifestyle that the addicted person is forced to live to keep up with their addiction. When you take away all those problems and just give the drug to the person who is GONNA use the drug anyways, you save money, you save resources, and you save peoples lives, and give them access to treatment to eventually get off the drug. You should really read some of the responses to this thread a little more careful becuz the discussion after the article completely explains the answers to all the shit u asking.

Sorry for the late response. Opiates lower the seizure threshold which, I know, seems counterintuitive. They actually, it is thought cause DA release by inhibiting the release of GABA in certain fibers in the limbic system that mediates heroin euphoria in part. GABA inhibits the release of DA so by inhibiting an inhibitor you get net release. The seizure issue you most often see in people who have a prexisting predisposition to seizures and mostly only when it is combined with cocaine into a speedball. Demerol is a special case in that it produces a metabolite that can cause seizures so their is a particularly increased risk with this medication.

Overall HMT is a great idea. In my opinion part of the therapy should be to outfit them with long term indwelling IV lines, if they agree to their instalation, to further reduce the complications associated with their use.

I known 2 people who use to have seizures when they did dope alot, and both of them had epilepsy. Never known a feen to seize out if they didnt already have some kind of problem with it. when you add coke into it thats another thing and i knew somebody who had a huge one after a speedball and he aint epileptic, but far as i know its rare to have one unless u already got a problem with it.

I for one do not believe in full legalisation of any of the aforementioned drugs; however I do believe in decriminalisation. The difference being that the drugs aren't made available ubiquitously and can only be obtained via the correct processes and procedures. Trafficking or drug diversion should still be a crime with maximum penalties. Specialist doctors should be able to treat people of addiction using either substitutes or the drug itself in a safe and secure environment. No one will argue against the idea that the war on drugs has been a costly failure with almost 90% of inmates imprisoned, based on drug related crime. Not to mention the money spent on trying to control the problem in the first place, and the lives that are literally destroyed in the fight aka Colombia. One tenth the money spent on fighting drugs would be enough to divert drug related problems from the justice system into the medical system where it belongs. Wanting to get high and drug addiction is not a crime, it is a medical problem.

Thats still censorship mate! Who will decide which are/are not decriminalised, you?
Fuk that. Legalise it all, let ppl make their own mistakes. Personally I'm sick of being nannied, totally gives me the shits. How much safer would drugs be if they were available through legitimate sources and the proceeds of sale were channelled back to the community, not some grubby criminal.
