I have a dear friend who lives in the states. As most of us know the states are a bitch for scripts, Doctors appts and anything medical. He has painful arthritis and would like some info on the best meds to take for this. NO! i'm not sourcing, just if anyone has any thoughts or experience on what would alleviate the pain the best. Personally I think something that alleviates swelling and aid in pain would be nice. Perhaps someone here is on meds for the same thing. I'd love to hear if it's helped and your thoughts on it.

Even if it's not meds but advice in general that would be wonderful.

Cheers in advance. <3

I will ask a friend of mine Sadie. I will see her tonight actually. She has had rheumatoid arthritis for more than 20 years. I will find out what she takes.

First big thing, is this osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or other?

Rheumatoid arthritis treatment is about, for the most part, controlling excessive immunity reactions which are taking a toll on tissue. Osteoarthritis means things are wearing out in places. Age, old injuries, inflammation are at issue rather than a systemic, internal attack on certain tissue.

Treating rheumatoid arthritis is complicated and I don't have the knowledge to hazard a guess. So many new immunomodulators involved with so many potential complications to consider.

Osteoarthritis responds to simple stuff like naproxen for a lot of people. Some find ibuprofen better than naproxen and the reverse is true for others. Heating pads and ice packs can both be useful. Reading about anti-inflammatory diets and integrating some of those factors into one's diet could be very helpful. I'm a fan of tumeric and boswellia as far as supplements, but I'm not a total believer in any particular alternative approach.

Regarding osteoarthritis in the knees or back, loosing weight (if above ideal weight) can be hugely beneficial. Healthy weight tends to be helpful not only for structural reasons, but for inflammation ones as well.

Thanks for getting back to me guys. Don't think my mate is awake but I'll need to ask which of the two he has and get back to you. I hate to see people in pain. I watched my mother and Uncle go through so much pain. My mother couldn't afford the meds and my Uncle would pay about $50 a pill for the meds he needed. Ridiculous! No, none of these are the same illness but that's not the point.

So many people put the NHS down but you really don't know how good we've got it. I'll try at get him to join so that he himself can answer these questions.

Again, thank you for being so kind. Sorry, different time zones etc and sleep. I can't just ask him now.

BTW: Thank you to Consumer, Don and Calico! xxx <3

I got arthritis in me wrist and hip and the absolute best thing I've found is summat called pernaton gel, sort of like deep heat. Also NSAIDs

Naproxen sounds like a good place to start. I think NSAID's are fantastic in general and I don't think Ive come across a 'stronger' one than naproxen, even when I was still at work and trusted to handle these sort of things.

For me personally: Diclofenac, Naproxen, Indomethacin and Ibuprofen co-administered is brilliant.
A little care needs to be taken dose wise because such a combo can very well eat into one's stomach lining.

Turmeric seems to have some anti-inflammatory properties, I think you need to add a bit of black pepper to increase its bio-availability. I've read studies that suggest it's good at preventing inflammation rather that reduce it. Nevertheless it could be a good thing to incorporate it one's diet.

Cheers guys, I've passed this info on. Hopefully he can find some relief.

Arthritis and why you have it is so personal, I can't imagine why someone would think a general question on a drug forum would help - this is a specialised area of medicine.

There's a lot of information out there if you google, but this stuff needs a doctor to deal with the symptoms. One way or the other that's going to be the outcome with whatever they prescribe and refer to.

I have osteoarthritis on my hands, back and ankles of all places. I see a pysio on the nhs and get specific meds that deal with my very specific symptoms.

Can't believe you've asked this question in a drug forum - not cool :\ though I'm sure your intentions were sound. It's just not appropriate or the place to promise hope to another. :|

A bit harsh mate, its not that personal and obviously they are asking people here cus they r experienced with drugs so they get a helpful answer hopefully.

I'm glad you're happy with the diagnostic information posted from sufferers and not practitioners. It's not harm reduction on a web site that is about drug HR, and I'm glad to not be relying on it.

Harsh maybe, but honest.

Only thing to add that hasn't been said. Capsacian rub is great when my hands start clawing up. Just have to remember to wash my hands before I use the can.

No disrespect, Kate, I don't see the problem with asking for advice about athritus here. I know many member who have athritus. Yes I do understand what you are saying however in America, not everyone is able to get medical attention due to lack of insurance, funds etc n so Sadie is just trying to get help for her friend. Remember this is also social as well as drugs forum so if Sadie can get some good feedback that may help her friend then that's ace in my books

Sorry I'm not very helpful but when I hurt my neck once from reading in a cold room they gave me cream that'a used for athritus. I don't know if it's used in the states it's called Movelat. Maybe s/he could look into something like this?

Evey

K, He's lost his job, had to move out of the family home due to a break up and cannot afford to go to a doctor. It is as he describes " generic" arthritis" Pain in pretty much all his joints. So yeah, A general pain relieve like diclofenac would probably help. I was on it. It can be a bit harsh on the tummy. He cannot afford to see the doctor nor can he afford the script fees they charge over there.

Sure, it's a bit unwise to ask for medical advice on here but I was asked to do so by HIM! I hate to see him in pain. It was more so he could research this for himself.... My friend wanted help and ask me specifically to ask on here. There is nothing wrong with being given a bit of advice so that he may research it himself. To find the medication best suited to his needs. But hey, cheers for that. :\

Thanks for your input Evey <3

I tend to agree with Evey here.

EADD is a forum with a very wide scope. I guess the social part pretty much includes just about everything that is going on in members lives. We even have threads for mental/physical health problems, which although granted aren't used that much anymore, do exist.

We have people from all walks of life here with experiences on many different issues. It's not a stretch of the imagination to think someone here may have some knowledge on such subjects. (which it seems they do...)

Granted, I wouldn't take everything posted here as gospel, but I don't see the harm in it. It's a good starting place.

PS - I wish your friend all the best in finding something that works. <3

Ill update this thread soon, accidenly saw it in the search.

Turmeric only lasts 2 hours in the bodt, only the formula meriva twice a day would show proper effectiveness, boswelia acts on a unique anti inflammatory pathway.

The right treatment would include
- supressin the pain
- Identify things that are directly related like tbf alpha i think and inflammation, target those pathways
- target the root causes like inflammation
- Adjust diet trough trial and error, diet can have a major impact on things like this, what diet works best is individual, gluten for example can release substances in the body that act on the opiate receptor, probably as antagonist, digestion plays a major role inthe pathalogy of alot of things, also chronic infections like vaccines that never got removed from the body if they are given to weaker individuals
- vitamins
-excercise

asking it here is not a bad idea at all, we discuss things like this all the time in the advanced section
