Maple Syrup Operation Mistaken For Meth Lab

A maple syrup operation in Anna, Illinois was mistaken for a meth lab. A tip led authorities to the home of Laura Benson, age 49, who was stunned by the accusation.

The 49 year old woman and her family collect sap from maple trees on the property and make their own maple syrup. They have been making their own maple syrup for five years.

The process involves attaching tubes to maple trees. The sap drains into large plastic storage containers scattered throughout the yard.

Benson’s neighbors observed the containers and suspected the family of running a meth lab. They contacted local law enforcement and reported the “suspicious” activity.

As reported by KFVS, when Benson saw law enforcement vehicles in her driveway. Her initial reaction was that her son might be in trouble. The drug enforcement agents explained that neighbors reported a suspected meth lab on the premises. Benson explained that she and her family were running a maple syrup operation, not a meth lab. She showed the agents how the operation works and assured them that they were not in the business of manufacturing drugs.

As reported ABC 7, Benson was shocked, but appreciative, that her neighbors were “alert” enough keep an eye out for criminal activity in the community. She was understanding about the mistake. She extended an open invitation to her neighbors to come over and see how maple syrup is made from tree sap. She even offered to make them pancakes.

The agents investigating the maple syrup operation, that was mistaken for a meth lab, all left with samples of homemade maple syrup.

My buddy got carded for buying maple syrup once.

Needless to say, the cashier was rather embarrassed when she realized it was not liquor
 
Now they just have to set up a meth lab and they are in the clear.

I certainly wouldn't offer my neighbours free pancakes in this situation. She should have explained the the neighbours that it makes a lot more sense to just come knock on the door and see whats up than to call the cops and put that whole family at risk. I am glad to hear their door wasn't busted open at dawn, family stunned with teargas/glash bang then hogtied in their living room.

I'm also glad it didn't go down that way. Because we've all seen those articles about when the cops raid the wrong house and do exactly what you just described.

But yea I would tell those neighbours to go fuck themselves. Tubes coming out of a tree and going into buckets/containers, and they somehow jump to the conclusion that it's part of a meth lab? Have they even seen what a meth lab looks like? A simple google search would have shown them how stupid they are.

I wouldn't go knock on the door and ask "Hey neighbor, are you running a meth lab?" as if it were actually a meth lab, shit could go down. I think in the Best of Bluelight, there's a thread on shit tweakers do. Then again, I wouldn't call the cops either because I'm not sure there is anyone I trust less.

I'd just do the research on what one looks like and easily learn that they didn't have one. My biggest thing though is what little I know is that these things smell really strongly...and I'm not sure how sap from a tree smells anything like strong smelling chemicals.

After all of this went down though, I would've told my neighbors to go fuck themselves.

Waste of money and time.
Silly that they would have to explain themselves: we were producing one (legal) thing that makes people feel good, not the other (illegal) thing that makes people feel good.
