Klonopin for flying?

That really sucks that you're dealing with fear of flying. I've never experienced it, but I'm sure it's caused some complications for you in your life. Weighing our options, is it best to live with your phobia and not fly ever or to take a slightly larger dosage than what your physician intended? Well, that's your choice, but in my opinion, I don't think there would be any problem in taking up to 3mg Clonazepam. This is only because you've experimented with lower dosages with no effect. 3mg is enough to send many into a blackout episode.

It's good that you don't drink Alcohol. You don't want to be escorted off the plane by U.S. Marshalls and be unable to fly for a completely different reason. As, I said, 3mg Clonazepam is right on the cusp but not totally extreme. Even one Alcoholic drink would probably be enough to send you into a blackout, so absolutely, zero Alcohol. If things got really bad for you, like you feel your anxiety rising imminently as you're getting ready to board, you can take a further dose sublingually (under the tounge) which will lead to a more rapid absorption than the oral route.

Do you notice the effects of the Clonazepam as it comes on? Are you traveling with someone who can help you if need be? The last question is important. Just having someone to direct you a little bit can make all the difference. This can be figured out.

Maybe a blackout dose would help him though if he really hates planes. Wouldn't remember a thing.

But if you do blackout you're gonna want to take more and it's not hard to go through the whole bottle like that, especially with .5's. You'll have a pretty massive problem too if you run out and can't get back on that plane to go home cause they aren't gonna give more Klonopin if you try gettin a refill early and the insurance denies it.

Like keif said, you're getting into dangerous territory for blacking out, and on a plane, that could lead to really terrible consequences.

Did your doctor give you a reason for why he won't prescribe other benzos? You should call him and tell him that it's not working at all. If you're not responding to clonazepam, he should prescribe something else. If not, it won't be physiologically dangerous to take 3mg of clonazepam, but you could get yourself into big trouble from the disinhibition.

If you have enough pills to accommodate this why not try a 'dry run' on the heavier dose, somewhere safe where you can, perhaps, afford to become disinhibited a little. Granted it's no fun losing your shit anywhere from these kind of medicines (I have made a right arse of myself from 'benzo rage' etc) but am glad that this happened to me in the relative safety of my house as a pose to being stuck 7 miles up in the air.

During times when my tolerance to these drugs wasn't crazy high, I would personally use either 2 - 4mg of clonazepam or about 30 - 40mg diazepam for medium haul flights (I know they are hardly equipotent but while both of these benzodiazepines always have good anxiolytic effect the diazepam always seems to do the trick for me at lower doses). Knock on wood, on most flights I have just passed out after take off, with pills allowing me to sleep for 95% + the length of the flight. As far as I can gather, aside from the issues discussed by the other posters DVT's are a small but very real risk element of using these medicines due to to the compounded effect of the drugs keeping passengers still and immobile in there seats. I don't know safe it would be to mitigate this with aspirin.

Wow, just because Xanax and Ativan are fast and short acting benzos/meds your doctor refuses to RX it to you?
As if Klonopin isn't an addictive benzo. lol.

My dad has this problem with fear of flying, but he just sits there and prays for the best, literally. lol

Fair play to him, if I could approach life's challenges like that without having to resort to quick fixes for everything I would be much better for it, present company accepted of course everybody needs help for their own valid reasons but I have helped myself far too much in all the wrong ways x

Sorry for going OT I genuinely feel it's due to diazepam disinhibition. This is the first night I have used any in weeks.

Do you do anything that takes alot of mental focus like drawing, math, reading something really technical? like I like chemistry so when im nervous ill either draw chemicals or think of ways to do reactions or read really complicated papers it hard to worry because your brains pretty much maxed out

Or if I have panic thats really physical like shakey hands and in the chest and stomach this is going to sound a bit weird but I listen to music with a femalebvoice preferably one with a extremely calming very female sounding voice like paramore or lana del ray. it sounds odd and I dont really have any science to back it up but for me it really helps

I do a fair amount of maths and reading you describe (mostly in one brain and out the other eye mind) but I am fatally thick and do not derive any calm from this and am purely motivated by futile attempts at mental self improvement. The only non - pharm anxiolysis I can achieve is through passive stuff like watching documentaries or tele box sets (films and music get me too excited).

Sorry again for going OT - it's my fault for derailing the thread (if you wish to start a drug free relaxation thread anywhere d1nach I would be happy to try and contribute to that.. just do not expect any amazing revelations / tips xx ;) )

Is he a Christian Scientist? I hear that expecting prayer to solve major life problems can lead to unfavorable circumstances ;).

Seriously though, OP, will you please do us the honor of letting us know how everything went for you? I'm sure we've got some other Aviophobes on here who would love to have some information that they could use as a point of reference for handling their own fears. In this current day, not being able to get on a plane can be a life-altering condition.

I was talk to your doc again about switching meds if those aren't working. Perhaps to valium as that has a very long half life if he's afraid of xanax. The max dose of clonazapam suggested is 4mg a day, so you could try more to see if it will help, also simple things like reading and breathing techniques could help as well.
