Is 5HTP worth buying?

My doctor sells 5HTP for (Null) and I'm curious if anyone here takes it and if it helped their mood at all.

I bought 1 bottle 3 or 4 years ago but I don't think I gave it enough time to do anything. With the large amounts of narcotics that I take, plus klonopin, Gralise, verapamil, promethazine and Zofran would adding this do anything? I also take magnesium, Biotin and give myself a vitamin B12 shot every 2 weeks.

I feel like I take so much medicine and vitamins already that if I add anything else to the mix I want it to really do something. If it's some really subtle help then I'd probably skip it.

Anyone take it? Does it help your mood?

What do you mean your doctor sells 5-htp? Is he a psychiatrist? If my psychiatrist tried to sell me their personal dietary supplements i would be beyond annoyed.

I know, it's weird, but he sells bottles of 5HTP and one other supplement but I've forgotten what it's called.

He felt it would be helpful to me but I didn't notice anything after a month so I didn't buy anymore.

He is a pain specialist but also takes care of addicts trying to get off narcotics so his waiting room is full of interesting brochures and such. He prescribes suboxone and methadone for people trying to wean off as well as taking care of pain patients.

Pickledmon, is there a reason you think it's not for me? Perhaps it would be too weak up against all my other meds and vitamins (forgot to mention I take multivitamins every day too).

Yeah, essentially. You said you dont want to take any more meds that have subtle effects. 5htp is very subtle in fact I'm not even sure its any more than a placebo. I mean, there is probably something to it... but it is in the same ballpark as placebo ime.

Its one of those things that some people swear by and some people get nothing from. I am the latter, so I don't really endorse it. Perhaps if it had worked for me, I would.

Thank you. I appreciate the replies and help. I see no reason to add yet another stupid pill to my daily routine if it doesn't do something worthwhile.
I'm not sure what my doctor thought it would do for me, but I'll save the money for food instead.

I really want emphasis what a conflict it is that he or she is trying to sell you his non fda approved dietary supplement.

I would never buy any chemical where the doctor is the seller.

I thought it was tacky, but then thought maybe there was a good reason that he sold it. He is always recommending various vitamins such as my b12 shots and magnesium so I wondered if 5htp was worth it.

I don't know where they were manufactured but they don't have his name on them. It's just a stark white bottle with 5htp on front and the back says some crap about what it does for you.

At least it's not as bad as when I go to a dermatologist. They sell entire lines of skincare with their name on them and damn they are expensive! They also load you up with samples of every type of skincare. I walked out feeling like I'd gone shopping at Sephora.

IMO if he truely believes those supplements work then he should still stand behind their use even if you buy it by someone else.

I've put myself on a permanent 5-htp diet last year after another medication caused debilitating mood swings and I testify that it worked to stabilize my mood. I switched to tryptophan afterwards as I read that 5htp boosts serotonin at the expense of other neurotransmitters and tryptophan simply boosts serotonin without that nasty baggage. A few months later I stopped taking tryptophan and I experienced an awesome manic episode but days later fell into a suicidal depressive one which was quickly fixed by resuming the intake. Months after that I tried taking half a pill per day and the mood swings returned. Recently I forgot to take it over the weekends but experienced no consequences so I tried abstaining for a few more days and continued to have a stable mood. It's been weeks and I've had no mood swings so I'm pleased to no longer have to take it every day.

TL;DR: 5-htp and its mother tryptophan both worked for me. I wouldn't mix it with any medication that works on serotonin receptors, though.
