Indonesia's anti-drugs chief Budi Waseso proposes killing traffickers to clear prisons

First he wanted to enlist crocodiles to guard drug criminals — now Indonesia's unorthodox anti-drugs chief says that killing traffickers is an effective way of clearing overcrowded prisons.

National Narcotics Bureau head Budi Waseso said the death penalty for traffickers is not proving enough of a deterrent so he proposed force-feeding drugs to convicted smugglers.

"The country will be burdened by these dealers," Mr Budi said while speaking at a drugs-burning event in Jakarta.

"The prisons get more crowded, the numbers of prisoners increase, the capacity of prisons is limited... so we must think of solutions and when these perpetrators have the intention to kill, and they commit mass and premeditated murders, then to ensure the country is not at lost, then let these people pay the consequences of what they've done."

The Narcotics Bureau estimates that around 2.5 million Indonesians use drugs regularly.

At the Jakarta event the Narcotics Bureau displayed its latest haul — 270 kilograms of ice, alongside the six men accused of importing it from China.

They were forced to watch as the ice was incinerated.

Mr Waseso said that destroying the drugs is the best way to ensure the ice did not "grow feet" and "walk out" of police storage. A small amount will be kept as evidence for their trial.

Mr Waseso also does not have much faith in the prison system.

"Even those perpetrators who have been sentenced to death penalty still can maintain their activities and syndicates in relation to drugs trade," he said.

He has proposed a specially-built drugs prison.

"We place them on an island, on the outermost border. The ministry of justice and human rights are already surveying possible locations," he said.

He said that the waters around the prison should be filled with crocodiles — and nobody is sure whether he is joking or not.

"Even though our human resources are limited we would still have the assistance of other things, such as the crocodiles. That's one example but we can also utilise tigers, lions, or other ideas," Mr Waseso said.

He said seizures like the 270 kilograms of ice did not mean that Indonesia's ruthless drugs policy was failing to dent the trade.

"We've put in extraordinary efforts but we have some limitations because of our geography and democracy that make it easier for the drugs to enter," he said.

Tigers, piranhas to join crocodile guards at proposed Indonesian 'prison island' for drug traffickers

After sparking ridicule with a proposal to build a prison island for drug convicts surrounded by crocodiles, Indonesia's anti-drugs tsar has now gone further — revealing he also wants tigers and piranhas as guards.

In an idea that seemed to come straight out of a James Bond film, Budi Waseso this week unveiled the prison island plan, explaining that crocodiles cannot be bribed by drug traffickers seeking to escape jail.

He embarked on a tour of the country to find "the most ferocious type of crocodile" to guard the jail, which is to be for drug convicts who have been sentenced to death.

The head of the national anti-drugs agency has faced widespread mockery over the plan.

But Mr Waseso appeared far from backing down on Friday, saying that he was considering the addition of man-eating piranhas and tigers as guards.

"It is also possible we may use piranhas, and because the number of personnel at the prison might not be enough, we can also use tigers," he was cited as saying in local reports.

Indonesia already has some of the toughest anti-narcotics laws in the world, including death by firing squad for traffickers.

The country sparked international uproar in April when it put to death seven foreign drug convicts, including Australian Bali Nine duo Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.

But president Joko Widodo has insisted that drug dealers must face death as the country is fighting a "national emergency" due to rising narcotics use.

Despite the harsh laws, Indonesia's corrupt prison system is awash with drugs, and inmates and jail officials are regularly arrested for narcotics offences.

Anti-drugs agency spokesman Slamet Pribadi confirmed Mr Waseso was also weighing the possibility of tigers and piranhas as guards, and hit back at suggestions the prison island plan was a joke.

"This is serious, this is not a joke," Mr Pribadi said.

"Drug trafficking is an extraordinary crime and therefore the fight must also be extraordinary, we cannot fight the usual way."

The idea is still in the early stages, and the agency is in discussions with the justice ministry about it.

Neither a location nor a potential opening date has been decided.

Just as long as he constructs the special drugs prison out of drugs then it will be okay for those awaiting execution after being arrested for the roach under the carpet in their hotel room...

Tigers are endangered. How about they take so.e stray cats a d teach them how to use an assault rifle? Oraybe put lasers on their heads that will sense the junkie in people and then vaporize them? That would be cool.

And magnets! Like in face off! And robot guards with 25mm Gatling gun arms...and to top it off, they could get a few yetis from the Himalayas and make them head of security for the entire James Bond villian island thing he has invisioned!

Note to self- don't go to Indonesia..they throw ice in a furnace...bow the hell do you burn ice before it melts back to water? What a bunch of idiots
 
I counter-propose that the dickhead who proposes this stupid proposal is executed immediately in order to save lives from being lost due to his filthy mouth.
