In theory, __________. But I find that in practice, __________.

In theory, one could attempt to deconstruct the theory/practice dichotomy, but in practice one is simply engaging of the praxis thereof.

Curses! beat deftly at my own game. ;)

Okay...What of 'practicing' theorization? What of theorizing one's practices?

So maybe in theory, theory and practice stand opposed in some fashion, but 'in action' (as they are, becoming in process), theory and practice bind 'dialectically', at once mutually constitutive and successively iterative.**

I like this formulation of mine better, as the former was more how I tend to think, not how I'd wager that things 'are'.

But is this too the "praxis" of which you spoke? ;)

ebola
**I believe this a proper dialectic, actually, Marx or Hegel style...not just reciprocal relation, as some often use the term.

^^
Maybe theory and practice are two articulations of the same process. Practice describing embodied, practical knowledge which is not formalised in language (knowing how to "go on" Wittgenstein style), whereas theory represents an active, cognitive working out of the "rules" by which people are able to "go on", and their subsequent formalisation and representation in language.

Theorisation can go on to influence practice (although not necessarily). But ultimately they represent two different modes of knowledge which are outcomes of the same process, ie, a subject's practical relationship with/to the world. The influence of theory on practice is part of this. I'm not sure if this actually contributes anything, but there you are.

Also:

In theory, equal rights lead to just outcomes. In practice, "between equal rights, force decides."

In theory, the "in theory.../in practice..." phrasing talks about the difference between 1) how things would be if some theoretical model or claimed explanation were true, and 2) how things are in reality. In practice, though, people seem to use the phrasing just as a way of introducing any observation which might be unexpected --- whether it's unusual, contrary to common perception, or mildly counterintuitive or paradoxical. Kind of along the lines of "You might think X, but really Y." :)

Hah! Indeed. Or in my case:

Becomes:

Liberals (who are incorrect) think equal rights lead to just outcomes, but Marx (who is correct) says that "between equal rights, force decides."

zorn, you're so meta. =D

In theory, in many jurisdictions require everyone charged with a felony is entitled to a zealous and competent defense even if they can not afford it.

But I find that in practice, defendants are a caseload while attention, competence, and zeal can be in very short supply. Defense attorneys, jurors, defendants, and prosecutors have all told me stories about defenders just going through the motions. I don't know if I know a solution to this as it is human to have ruts in jobs and careers where you just go through the motions.

I suppose I'm not very creative:

In theory, [insert any form of utopian government, such as state socialism] is an ideal way to be ruled.

In practice, [that is, historically] most alternatives to capitalism or militant authoritarianism (or some combination of the two) have tended to be short-lived, ineffective, or infeasible.

In theory, all men are created equal.

In practice, each man is treated differently based on his unique combination of psychological and environmental factors.

In theory this thread could last for ever but in practice I must bump it if it is to survive the prune.
