So my gf had minor surgery that required an overnight stay at the hospital. After the procedure she was in a lot of pain as the anesthesia wore off. So they gave her some pain killers but what I found interesting is how the nurse would stick around to watch her take and swallow the pills. Do you think it was because I was in the room and they were concerned I'd steal it or something? I've never had any opioids in my life but of course they don't know that. Then I was wondering: what happens when folks who have built up a tolerance to opioids have to go for surgery and then recover? Do they just suffer like never before as the painkillers they give are vastly insufficient? Will the hospital accommodate the tolerance? What about anesthesia, does that even work?
