4 Stars. I saw it for the first time yesterday and I really enjoyed it.

It was already mentioned, but I agree that the scene where Ross and Nikki (Brittany Murphy) are driving in the car, spun as fuck, having delusional conversations, was very well done. Nikki keeps repeating"I'm going to be a great mother," and Ross saying how his girlfriend and him "really love each other."

They each say they aren't hooked and could "stop anytime they want."

I thought the movie was quite clever in an understated way, i think some people may have missed that.

I'm going to go watch it again :). I'll be back with more comments.

"poorly conceived" is a subjective judgement call. whether or not something is poorly conceived (and to what extent) is in the eye of the individual beholder. if i understand you correctly, you are suggesting that it's not - that an aspect such as quality of a script is an objective, measurable quality.

Since this was recently bumped with a vote in the poll, I'm going to continue my original argument.

Subjectivity vs Objectivity of a film. Of course, there is a difference... but that doesn't mean people who subjectively think a movie like "Meet the Spartans" is the single greatest achievement in American comedy have a fucking leg to stand on. My point, and I do have one, is that someone placing a movie such as spun on their list of "greatest movies EVAR!" are probably sick in the head or very ill informed.

My goal here isn't to make people think that Spun is a shitty movie. Instead, I just wish people would realize that there are many other movies that can have the same impact, and they go about it in a much better way.

Some people need to broaden their horizons... is basically my point.

I thought it captured the whole mood and feeling of being spun out the way it was filmed.

this was a comedy, you folks need to lighten up
Absolutely.

While far from being my favourite movie, I really enjoyed Spun for what it is.

I really don't understand why so many people compare it to Requiem for a Dream. If you try using a ruler to measure wight, you'll be disappointed. To me, the only thing the two films had in common was that amphetamines are being used by people. Otherwise, they are two completely different animals.

I can't believe all the negative reviews this has had on here. I thought it was fucking hilarious.

As for all the comments about inaccuracy, I could tell it wasn't going to be a completely accurate portrayal of the meth experience as soon as the cartoon hallucinations kicked in. Sometimes you need to suspend disbelief, even if you intimately know the subject the movie deals with. You don't criticise an action movie because somebody fires 40 shots from a pistol without reloading, you just sit back and enjoy the ride.

This movies randomness, especially the 70's cops (and their TV show), its debasement of A list celebrities and its soundtrack are what make it a top film for me. I think the camera work is pretty good too.

^ I found the film's witty ridiculousness to be a very accurate portrayal of the Meth experience. You haters must be getting really bad meth :p

one day my hubby left the dvd playing on the intro.......while i slept....

"DONT answer the goddamn phone....!!!"

gotta love the animation part though.:!

Does the movie 'Spun' accurately portray the life of a meth addict?

I've used every commonly use illicit drug, opiates: heroin, morphine, codeine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, buprenorphine, tramadol, demerol, fentanyl, etc), benzos (valium, xanax, versed, ativan, klonopin, librium), psychedelics (LSD, shrooms, MDMA, MDEA, salvia, DXM), stimulants (ritalin, focalin, adderall, dexedrine).

Only drugs i really haven't done are mescaline, methamphetamine and PCP (besides a few opiates, benzos , research chemicals, etc).

For me watching 'trainspotting' is a pretty accurate depiction of heroin use, as is 'candy' (with heath ledger). requiem for a dream is a little bit not as accurate IMO (pupils enlarging after IV heroin instead of contracting, guy never seeking medical help for his arm, etc).

I'm just curious as to how people who have used meth and have been in that culture and lifestyle how they feel about the way meth addiction/use is portrayed in 'Spun' with Jason Schwartzmen, Micky Rourke, etc.

i know there is a poll for this movie but i want to know specifically what people think about its accuracy in portraying meth addiction and the lifestyle that goes with it.

thanks,
EOJ

(mods maybe merge this into the 'film: spun' thread?) either way is cool.

I just saw this movie after seeing it mentioned on BL and hearing friends talk about it. And I must say I was amazingly disappointed! It was barely held together with mindless drug-induced stupidity, the scenes with the cops somewhat entertaining, but there was no plot whatsoever. Just a bunch of stupid shit that people who don't sleep do- and the conversations were just plain meaningless- I could go visit some friends' houses and be exposed to the same level of unintelligent, incoherent, fast-paced discussion.

the whole point IMO was to put the viewer INTO the life of a meth addict, so it won't have a plot or anything because you are a meth addict and life is just going by in a blur of getting high, running out, waiting, scoring, dealing with other addicts, etc. there is no life for an addict and i think this movie got that accross very well by NOT having a real deep plot, that would have totally ruined it and it's whole purpose of accurately portraying meth addicts.

just watched spun for the third time. and this quote sums up why the movie seems so shallow and plot-less.

"it's weird cuz stuff happens and you don't really notice it when its happening life is sort of passing by." - nikki to ross in the car towards the end

It's been a few years since I've seen the movei, but one of the lines I remember wsa when the cowboy meth cook was going on about big tits and small ass. That was funny. Then the frisbee guy was glued to that game and he had to kill one more ape.

That movie made me feel like I needed a shower just from watching it. True to the meth style of life, in that sense. Nasty drug, that suff! I thought Mickey Rourke was damn funny in it.

I just barely saw this for the first time today!

It was good, but kinda painful to watch. I certainly have known people like that.

I liked it a few years ago. But I think I was just trying to convince myself, because I liked a few of the cast. In reality, it's a pretty irritating film. It certainly has it's moments, but overall it's not one I'm constantly digging out to watch again and again.
