Heroin Feeling sick after long term heroin/methadone use.

Hi all - I have been a heroin user almost 20 years, & for most of them also on a moderate level of methadone. Around a year ago I increased my 'done to 100mg for around 6 months, then back down to 80. Around the same time I started getting quite sick (severe headache/migraine, nausea etc) after using. This starts after an hour or so and can last up to a day. Haven't changed the amount I use, & the source doesn't make a difference (others using the same are fine). I don't have Hep C but I do drink a lot. My GP said it was reasonably common in long term users or those on higher methadone, but I've never heard that, & he didn't explain why. Has anyone else found this happening? It's not necessarily a bad thing (I've pretty much stopped using altogether), but I just don't understand it.

Is it only after using heroin? Or after your methadone too? Do you inject?

Hi - yes, this only ever happens after heroin use. I don't believe the Methadone (on its own, anyway) to be the culprit, I feel no ill-effects from it otherwise. Sometimes when this has happened after using I have already taken my methadone as normal, other times may have missed a dose - it doesn't seem to make a difference. And yes, I have always injected.

Have you considered it could be due to injection complications? Does your doctor know you inject? If not, they may have wanted to do some tests if you told them. I'm glad your use is decreasing anyway.
I'm still not at all sure though! Could be something used to cut the H doesn't agree with you?

Yeah, it's definitely odd! Luckily for me my doctor is a very caring, nonjudgmental addition specialist. There's nothing I don't or won't tell him - the only thing he has ever 'tsk tsk'd' about is that I don't always use filtered water to inject with! If only we were all so lucky, right ( I am in Melbourne, Australia).
My first suspicion too was that the heroin is being cut with something that is causing this, but given the span of time involved I'm not so sure.
As you pointed out, it is actually a positive in the long run - just a bit of a mystery I guess! Thanks for your feedback :)

Hi Chris - can't really pinpoint an exact area tbh. Just a horrible head pain that only lessens with time, a load of ibuprofen/panadol, and bed rest, although I guess it's possible it only lessens once the smack is out of my system??

maybe just go cold turkey for a day or two with the purpose of cleaning out your body just keep some dope nearby for when you want it drink plenty of water to I hardly drink any now because of the drugs making me lazy

Hi Pete - glad to hear you also have a decent GP! I've certainly seen some shockers in my time, from those not giving any more than 2 week scripts (so they can rake in the $ with all your necessary repeat visits), to the judgemental ones that treat u like shit & think everything u say is a lie since u are a drug user..... Anyway, the good ones are worth their weight in gold. Hang on to your doc if he is good - we're the lucky ones! Stay safe my friend :)

Haha

My gp has reduced me by nothing but he has started only giving me 6 day supplies instead of 12 this is not him being a dick though because no exaggerating my last 20 prescription have been done 3 or 4 days early on a row ive had more done early been on it for bloody years! dont ask me how managed to get so many early refills my chemist made jokes that my doctor must fancy me my chemist if a very funny guy btw hes the type that can say just about anything and make it funny anyway it looks like my doc no longer fancied me my last prescription I ordered early after a whole 2 scripts sort of on time ish he didn't ask me for a cosultation he just gave her 50 tablets instead of 100 at first i thought maybe theirs a mistake but no the doc has spoken tbh since this change i have more codeine more often, i run out less so this helped me even more and just proves how much of a dick my doctor ISN'T godbless em although we haven't seen eye to eye in the past we have built character in our doc-patient relationship and that goes a long way at the surgery.

What meds are you on I was briefly on tramadol, dihydrocodeine and codeine because i accidentally ordered them all damn autistic spazs you can never predict us ;)

Do u mean 6 day scripts of methadone, so u have to see him each week? Unusual that he won't reduce you, coz most docs seem to push for it, but it's not always the best thing & it's good he recognises that if it's not what u want/need. And hey, if my doc fancied me I'd be rapt!!!
The only other med I'm on is Quetiapine/Seroquel which helps me sleep. I only take a very low dose (around 20mg/day). I've known people on 100 or 200mg, & I've no idea how they function. I'd like to get off it one day soon. Until a year or 2 ago I was also on various antidepressants (since age 15). I honestly can't say I've noticed any difference since stopping them.
My next step is getting off the 'done, but I'd rather take my time than screw it up! :)

No codeine lol not methadone its for chronic pain not addiction dude!

Well then u really are lucky coz getting any1 to prescribe long-term codeine gets harder by the day. Methadone can be & is also used for chronic pain treatment, & it can be easier on the liver than other options. I had major back surgery in 2006, but was only given oxycodone for a short period because the methadone took care of the rest. I've no idea what my real level of pain will be once I stop it!

Yes, take your time getting off methadone. It took me almost 2 years of tapering and once i was down below 30 i micro dosed suboxone then detoxed that. It was almost painless because i did it so slow
Good luck to you and if i can do it you can:)

Thanks Lucy20. I have heard that it's a good idea to switch to suboxone once on a lower dose of methadone - nice to hear it actually works! And well done!! (y)
