Favourite song lyrics

Stay on the streets of this town
and they'll be carving you up alright
They say you gotta stay hungry
hey baby I'm just about starving tonight
I'm dying for some action
I'm sick of sitting 'round here trying to write this book
I need a love reaction
come on now baby gimme just one look...

Bruce Springsteen is very underrated as a lyricist imo, he's more of a story teller than a poet perhaps, but he tells those stories in a very powerful way. Born In The USA and Darkness OTEOT are 2 of my all time favorite albums to this day. The music and lyrics are just soooooooo good, and he's inspiring the new generation of bands like The Gaslight Anthem, who use loads of his metaphors and references in their tracks, as a mark of respect, rather than 'stealing his ideas'. If you like The Boss check out The Gaslight Anthem's '59 Sound album, it's one of the best albums of the last ten years by a mile imo.

The Boss joined TGA on stage (I think it was at Glastonbury) a few years ago, that must have been a great moment for TGA as they make no secret of the high esteem in which they hold Spingsteen. They dont even have to say that in an interview. I'ts obvious just from their lyrics, which I've been spamming the Favorite Lyrics thread with for several weeks now, as their lyrics are every bit as good as Springsteen's, in some ways some of them are arguably even better, but it's all a matter of subjective taste, yes many lines are very similar / familiar sounding, but that is totally deliberate thing on their part imo. They wouldn't sing about a girl called "Bobby Jean" for no reason would they.

There must be some mistake
I didn't mean to let them
Take away my soul
Am I too old is it too late

Turn me loose, set me free
Somewhere in the middle of Montanna
And gimme all I've got comin' to me
And keep your retirement
And your so called social security
Big City, turn me loose and set me free

Totally agree with all of that buddy. Love The Boss! and as you say His story telling is fantastic. My guilty pleasure of his is " Tougher than the rest " a love song but still the simplicity of his lyrics and his delivery just get me every time! Gonna check Out That TGA 59 Sound album asap mate thanks for the tip :)

Cheers King. Everyone i've managed to persuade to listen to at least the title track from the album "the 59 sound" has been very impressed. The rest of the album is equally good, but if you start with that track, if you're anything like me you'll be hugely impressed. They just have everything turned to awesome; lyrics, songwriting, intensity, 'the right sound' and great musicianship.

Vicious
Why don't you swallow razorblades?
You must think I'm some kind of gay blade
Oh baby you're so vicious

I ain't lookin' to compete with you
Beat or cheat or mistreat you
Simplify you, classify you
Deny, defy or crucify you
All I really want to do
Is, baby, be friends with you.

I heard this recently and it really struck a chord with me. Luckily it was a lovely day and I had sunnies to hide behind!

More Bobby Dylan lyrics!!! Good stuff. I can't get enough of them. I'm currently more certain than ever before that he is the best lyricist there has ever been.

"Never quite said what I wanted to say to you
Never quite managed the words to explain to you
Never quite knew how to make them believable
And now the time has gone
Another time undone

Hopelessly fighting the devil futility
Feeling the monster climb deeper inside of me
Feeling him gnawing my heart away hungrily
I'll never lose this pain
Never dream of you again.

The Only Ones - From Here To Eternity.

I see a woman with death in her eyes
But I don't have the time to pray
For her salvation or for her soul
She walks her chosen way
But in the darkness, and in the light
I have found some hope
Of me getting out, from this underground
I can't wait to get back home, back home

Such a tender age to sell her soul
For dreams that don't come true
She's like a woman whose whole life is dissolved
She's the living proof
That all that glitters is not gold
And even serpents shine
Ah...she got bitten then, she'll get bitten again
While I'm sitting here watching the tide, coming/come in

You made me feel responsible
For the state you've gotten yourself in
Oh I know it's impossible for you
To ever be the same person again

I got us into this, I've gotta get us out now
It's you and me all the way
From here to eternity
It's you and me all the way

The Only Ones:Inbetweens

Caught between right and wrong
Tell me, is there no escaping?
I just can't go on
Living from day to day

And sometimes when I wake up
Feel like I never woke up at all

Sordid clandestine love
It burns your heart out
Try to fix up an hour
In the back seat
Get to know each other
Can't you wait 'til the evening
When the stars are shining bright?

There's no-one around
Who could cause any danger
Who else but you
Would stay with me baby?
Ships out at sea
Oh to be free
Just like a sailor at sea
In the middle of the sea

Beautiful dawn - lights up the shore for me.
There is nothing else in the world,
I'd rather wake up and see (with you).
Beautiful dawn - I'm just chasing time again.
Thought I would die a lonely man, in endless night.
But now I'm high; running wild among all the stars above.
Sometimes it's hard to believe you remember me,

Beautiful dawn - melt with the stars again.
Do you remember the day when my journey began?
Will you remember the end (of time)?
Beautiful dawn - You're just blowing my mind again.
Thought I was born to endless night, until you shine.
High; running wild among all the stars above.
Sometimes it's hard to believe you remember me.

Will you be my shoulder when I'm grey and older?
Promise me tomorrow starts with you,
Getting high; running wild among all the stars above.
Sometimes it's hard to believe you remember me...

Muse – Unnatural Selection Lyrics
They'll laugh as they watch us fall
The lucky don't care at all
No chance for fate
It's unnatural selection
I want the truth!

I'm hungry for some unrest
I wanna push it beyond the peaceful protest
I wanna speak in a language that they will understand

Dedication to a new age
This is the end of destruction and rampage
Another chance to raise and never plead again

Counter balance this commotion
We're not droplets in the ocean
Ocean

They'll laugh as they watch us fall
The lucky don't care at all
No, chance for fate
It's unnatural selection
I want the truth!

No religion or mighty favors
Is there a hope that the facts would ever find us
Just make sure that you are looking out for number one

I'm hungry for some unrest
Well let's push it beyond the peaceful protest
I wanna speak in a language that you will understand

Counter balance this commotion
We're not droplets in the ocean
Ocean!

They'll laugh as they watch us crawl
The lucky don't share at all
No hope for fate
It's a random chance selection
I want the truth!

Try to ride out the storm,
I'll still make you believe
They are the special ones
(We have not been chosen)

We trust.
This is enough
You won't be the first
And you know that you won't be the last

Counter balance this commotion,
We're not droplets in the ocean
Ocean, ocean, ocean!

They'll laugh as they watch us fall
And the lucky they don't care at all
No chance for fate,
It's unnatural selection,
I want the truth, I want the truth,
I want the truth! I want the truth!

Nobody feels any pain
Tonight as I stand inside the rain
Ev’rybody knows
That Baby’s got new clothes
But lately I see her ribbons and her bows
Have fallen from her curls

She takes just like a woman, yes, she does
She makes love just like a woman, yes, she does
And she aches just like a woman
But she breaks just like a little girl

Queen Mary, she’s my friend
Yes, I believe I’ll go see her again
Nobody has to guess
That Baby can’t be blessed
Till she sees finally that she’s like all the rest
With her fog, her amphetamine and her pearls

She takes just like a woman, yes, she does
She makes love just like a woman, yes, she does
And she aches just like a woman
But she breaks just like a little girl

It was raining from the first
And I was dying there of thirst
So I came in here
And your long-time curse hurts
But what’s worse
Is this pain in here
I can’t stay in here
Ain’t it clear that—

I just can’t fit
Yes, I believe it’s time for us to quit
When we meet again
Introduced as friends
Please don’t let on that you knew me when
I was hungry and it was your world

Ah, you fake just like a woman, yes, you do
You make love just like a woman, yes, you do
Then you ache just like a woman
But you break just like a little girl

Can't get this fuckin song out of my head since rediscovering it yesterday:

The Cardiacs - Is this the life?

Following around to see a life that's never in
Always calling itself on its own phone
Though its never quite at home in the world today

See it to arranging the day
Prepared in its own special way
With added loving care
Though its not been there since yesterday

Looking so hard for a cause
And it don't care what it is
And never really ever seeing eye to eye
Though it doesn't really mind

Perhaps that's why It never really saw
Never really saw
Saw

Continuing the Bob Dylan tributes: BOB DYLAN "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)"

Darkness at the break of noon
Shadows even the silver spoon
The handmade blade, the child's balloon
Eclipses both the sun and moon
To understand you know too soon
There is no sense in trying.

Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn
Suicide remarks are torn
From the fools gold mouthpiece
The hollow horn plays wasted words
Proved to warn
That he not busy being born
Is busy dying.

Temptation's page flies out the door
You follow, find yourself at war
Watch waterfalls of pity roar
You feel to moan but unlike before
You discover
That you'd just be
One more person crying.

So don't fear if you hear
A foreign sound to you ear
It's alright, Ma, I'm only sighing.

As some warn victory, some downfall
Private reasons great or small
Can be seen in the eyes of those that call
To make all that should be killed to crawl
While others say don't hate nothing at all
Except hatred.

Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their marks
Made everything from toy guns that sparks
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It's easy to see without looking too far
That not much
Is really sacred.

While preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind its gates
But even the President of the United States
Sometimes must have
To stand naked.

An' though the rules of the road have been lodged
It's only people's games that you got to dodge
And it's alright, Ma, I can make it.

Advertising signs that con you
Into thinking you're the one
That can do what's never been done
That can win what's never been won
Meantime life outside goes on
All around you.

You loose yourself, you reappear
You suddenly find you got nothing to fear
Alone you stand without nobody near
When a trembling distant voice, unclear
Startles your sleeping ears to hear
That somebody thinks
They really found you.

A question in your nerves is lit
Yet you know there is no answer fit to satisfy
Insure you not to quit
To keep it in your mind and not forget
That it is not he or she or them or it
That you belong to.

Although the masters make the rules
For the wise men and the fools
I got nothing, Ma, to live up to.

For them that must obey authority
That they do not respect in any degree
Who despite their jobs, their destinies
Speak jealously of them that are free
Cultivate their flowers to be
Nothing more than something
They invest in.

While some on principles baptized
To strict party platforms ties
Social clubs in drag disguise
Outsiders they can freely criticize
Tell nothing except who to idolize
And then say God Bless him.

While one who sings with his tongue on fire
Gargles in the rat race choir
Bent out of shape from society's pliers
Cares not to come up any higher
But rather get you down in the hole
That he's in.

But I mean no harm nor put fault
On anyone that lives in a vault
But it's alright, Ma, if I can't please him.

Old lady judges, watch people in pairs
Limited in sex, they dare
To push fake morals, insult and stare
While money doesn't talk, it swears
Obscenity, who really cares
Propaganda, all is phony.

While them that defend what they cannot see
With a killer's pride, security
It blows the minds most bitterly
For them that think death's honesty
Won't fall upon them naturally
Life sometimes
Must get lonely.

My eyes collide head-on with stuffed graveyards
False gods, I scuff
At pettiness which plays so rough
Walk upside-down inside handcuffs
Kick my legs to crash it off
Say okay, I have had enough
What else can you show me ?

And if my thought-dreams could been seen
They'd probably put my head in a guillotine
But it's alright, Ma, it's life, and life only.

BOB DYLAN "Don't Think Twice It's All Right"

Well, it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
Even you don't know by now
And it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It'll never do somehow

When your rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your window, and I'll be gone
You're the reason I'm a-traveling on
But don't think twice, it's all right.

And it ain't no use in turning on your light, babe
The light I never knowed
And it ain't no use in turning on your light, babe
I'm on the dark side of the road

But I wish there was somethin' you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
But we never did too much talking anyway
But don't think twice, it's all right.

So it ain't no use in calling out my name, gal
Like you never done before
And it ain't no use in calling out my name, gal
I can't hear you any more

I'm a-thinking and a-wonderin' walking down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I am told
I gave her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don't think twice, it's all right.

So long honey, baby
Where I'm bound, I can't tell
Goodbye's too good a word, babe
So I'll just say fare thee well

I ain't a-saying you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it's all right.

Amazingly Dylan wrote this track when he was just 21.

I can't see any artist ever replacing Bob Dylan on my #1 spot.

And from 'It's alright Ma' - one of my favourite lyrics (money doesn't talk, it swears). My little personal quote on my profile has been ''He not busy being born is busy dying'' since I joined the site :)

EDIT: In light of recent sad news:

I was shadow-boxing earlier in the day,
I figured I was ready for Cassius Clay,
I said “Fee, fie, fo, fum, Cassius Clay, here I come,
26, 27, 28, 29, I’m gonna make your face look just like mine,
Five, four, three, two, one, Cassius Clay you’d better run,
99, 100, 101, 102, your ma won’t even recognize you,
14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, gonna knock him clean right out of his spleen.

She says, "Look out, Daddy, don't want you to tear your pants.
You could get wrecked in this dance."
They say whisky will kill you, but I don't think it will
I'm riding with you to the top of the hill
