Famous hairstyle 'The Rachel' was created while stoned

IT was the hair cut that was copied by a generation of admiring women.

But the man behind Jennifer Aniston's most famous haircut has revealed some unexpected inspiration for the sought-after style.

Celebrity hairdresser Chris McMillan, who in the past battled drug addiction, said that he was high when he created 'The Rachel' for the actress.

In an interview with WWD he revealed that, having spent the last 14 years sober, it is only now that he feels "safe enough to say that" - but he did not reveal what he had been taking at the time.

Mr McMillan created the cut for Miss Aniston, 44, for the role of Rachel Green in hit TV show Friends, between the first and second seasons of the sitcom.

'The Rachel' duly became one of the most requested styles in salons around the world during the 1990s and according to one poll remains the most popular of all time among women.

In interviews with the US media, Mr McMillan said he designed the look because Miss Aniston's hair was originally long and frizzy.

Describing how he did it, he said that he "cut the bottom, layered it from existing bangs [fringe] to bottom, took a pin, pinned it over and blew it out smooth."

Miss Aniston jokingly replied: "And you know what happened after that...They came to you, and then all of a sudden everybody started coming in with this flicky, flicky hairdo and I was like, 'What's happening?!'"

Miss Aniston admitted she finds it 'hysterical' that she has come to be defined by the style given that she 'grew up with the worst hair'.

In a previous interview Miss Aniston said she actually hated 'The Rachel' style. Speaking to Allure magazine in 2011 she described it as "the ugliest haircut I've ever seen."

McMillan and Aniston are doing the media rounds to promote a new hair-care line they have collaborated on, Living Proof.
