I believe completely the story about going to the DAs office, and meeting with the ADA on your case.

Keep in mind though that where the stakes are low, criminal law can be practiced like that; the lawyers know each other, and if the misconduct alleged isn't egregious or there are significant countervailing facts, the ADA might be inclined to simply toss it.

When the stakes are higher... then things get more interesting, and who you know doesn't matter so much (unless you or your friends are close with a good attorney).
