Drug victim's mum wants boyfriend jailed
A NSW mother wants her daughter's former boyfriend jailed for supplying the ecstasy pills that it's believed killed her.
A tearful Kerry Roberts told a Sydney magistrate she didn't want Jordan Duffy to get "a slap on the wrist" for giving her 21-year-old daughter Janie Panton Roberts several MDMA capsules at a music event last June.
"If he's supposed to love her, why would you give her something like that?" Ms Roberts said during an emotional victim impact statement at Duffy's sentence hearing on Thursday.
"I hope it never happens to somebody else, and I don't want him to get community service, I want him to get jail."
Wiping her eyes with a tissue, the heartbroken mother said she found out about her daughter's death on the news.
Duffy had repeatedly apologised to her at the funeral but she was unable to forgive him.
"He supplied my daughter with drugs that led to her death...he put them in her hand," she said.
"He must have known...did it even cross his mind there is every chance that she might die?"
The Newtown Local Court heard Duffy, 19, arranged the ecstasy several hours before he and Ms Roberts attended an event at the Petersham Inn in Sydney on June 4.
Prosecutor Skye Stromquist said once at the club Duffy bought seven MDMA pills from a man and gave three to Ms Roberts - a "significant amount".
The next morning Ms Roberts fell ill and died before paramedics could arrive.
Duffy has pleaded guilty to one count of supplying a prohibited drug.
In a letter to the court he said he felt "numb" and thought about his dead girlfriend constantly.
"That morning haunts me every day and I wish I could change my actions," he wrote in the letter, quoted in court by his lawyer Arjun Chhabra.
"It feels like a heavy cloud of guilt is always following me."
Mr Chhabra said since the tragedy Duffy has given up drugs, moved back home and wants to retake his HSC next year.
He had suffered enough punishment and should be discharged without a conviction, the lawyer argued.
"He lost his best friend, he lost the love of his life. She died in his presence in their bedroom," Mr Chhabra said.
Magistrate Margaret Quinn is due to sentence Duffy on March 10.
