Females have been proven to be more loyal and better protectors than males. As a general rule. Not talking about trained animals such as K 9.
Breeders say it may be the Motherly instinct in them even if they haven't had pups.
A female chow will F you up if you mess with her master. So will many other breeds. Not saying a male won't protect you but they may not have the bite to kill instinct of females when their family is threatened.
Other than that it's always a good idea to spay or neuter whichever sex you have. Females constantly come in heat and bleed just like human females.
And males will track the scent for miles when they wanna get it on. Males and females both don't behave well when the hormones are in the air. They will bolt away from you and not listen real well. They will also ignore you when you try and call them back. And if they do manage to find the creator of that lovely scent if you have a female you will now be a proud dad of a litter or if you have a male you will have contributed to the unwanted puppies.
