Documents: El Paso man was beaten to death during Ecstasy drug deal
An argument over the sale of Ecstasy pills turned into a vicious beating that killed a 22-year-old man in his Central El Paso home on Friday, court documents state.
Less than 24 hours after the body of Jose Castañon was found, detectives arrested Sonia Bautista, 21, Ricardo Lorenzo Macias Jr., 21, and Brianna Garay, 18, on a capital murder charge.
The case is detailed in complaint affidavits filed by a police detective and obtained on Monday by the El Paso Times.
According to the documents, Macias and the two young women went to Castañon's home to buy Ecstasy pills at about 2 a.m. Friday.
Ecstasy is a synthetic stimulant sometimes used during raves, parties and dance clubs for mood enhancement.
"During an argument over the payment for the drugs, the defendants beat (Castañon) to the ground, stomped on his head, and hit him on his head with an object," the affidavit states.
The documents alleged that Macias admitted beating and holding down Castañon. Bautista allegedly told investigators that she beat Castañon and broke a glass jar over his head.
Garay also allegedly admitted to taking part in the crime.
After killing Castañon, the three people allegedly ransacked the house before finding and stealing the drugs and money, documents stated.
Shortly after 2 p.m. Friday, patrol officers checking on a call of an "unknown problem" found Castañon dead inside his small pink house in the 2600 block of Hamilton Avenue near Alabama Street.
Documents stated that an inspection of Castañon's cellphone led detectives to Macias, who allegedly admitted to taking part in the beating and who also identified Bautista and Garay.
Before 6 a.m. Saturday, the three suspected killers were under arrest, according to jail records.
Bautista, of the 3700 block of Cumberland Avenue; Macias, of the 3800 block of Porter Avenue; and Garay, of the 3900 block of Clifton Avenue; face a charge of capital murder because the killing took place during the commission of a burglary.
They remained jailed Monday under a $100,000 bond each. Capital murder is punishable by life in prison or the death penalty.
