Before the man and the woman ascend at the end, there is the fire serpent. The serpent of fire lies dormant in the base of the spine of every human being. Once it is activated(there are various ways to do this) massive amounts of energy(prana) rises up the spinal column to the brain. This energy revitalizes the brain, and then the body. This is known as a Kundalini awakening.

People that have had Kundalini awakenings will have opened chakras, meaning their third eye will be open. Having an open third eye means you gain access to higher sensory ability, or in other words a sixth sense. People are considered ascended after they've had a Kundalini awakening because they are now functioning in a more complete state. Humans by default are born with their chakras closed.
