Codeine alternative/dosage?

Hey,
SWIM recently has been trying opiates, and was recommended to try codeine first as its a 'beginner drug'... so swim tried first 60mg of codeine phosphate with no effects AT ALL.
Next day swim tried 120mg and after around 45-50 mins swim had slight itching but no other effects... so swim has come up with the conclusion that he just cant metabolize it? Any better alternatives that can be recommended or is swim doing something wrong here?

You may be right about the metabolism, some people due to their genetic makeup do not metabolize drugs like codeine very well. Also, some medications can inhibit the metabolism of codeine. Personally I never got much out of codeine either, even at 200 mg. I don't know what you have access to but entry level dosage for hydrocodone is 10-15 mg. No metabolism is required.
