The owner of a Brooklyn-based maraschino cherry company killed himself Tuesday during a drug raid on his Red Hook factory. After watching law enforcement agents discover a fake wall, Dell's Maraschino Cherries owner Arthur Mondella reportedly locked himself in his private bathroom, yelled "take care of my kids" to his sister, and then shot himself in the head.

Not long after the shooting, investigators found more than 80 pounds of marijuana and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash behind the hidden entrance.

Later, after executing a search warrant on the secret entrance, investigators uncovered "a huge marijuana-growing operation" underneath the warehouse, a source said.

In the space below the plant, they also found numerous high-end vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce, a Porsche and Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

"Underground, it was really 'Breaking Bad,'" said the astounded law enforcement source.

Wow, sounds like he was living the drug dealer's dream life.

Such a shame to hear he killed himself. That's my depressing dose of news for the day... 8(

Dell’s Maraschino Cherries owner Arthur Mondella, 57, stood by and nervously watched as authorities spotted suspicious shelving in a storage room at his Red Hook facility — then opened up a door to the false wall behind it and the smell of weed wafted out, law enforcement sources said.

Mondella immediately “asked to use the bathroom, he went in the bathroom, and, ‘Boom,’ ” a source said.
Before shooting himself once in the head, Mondella told his sister, “Take care of my kids,” sources said.

Investigators later found three large bags of pot stashed behind the fake wall at the landmark business, which Mondella’s grandfather started.
He is suspected of using part of the factory as a grow house, sources said.

Mondella had been trying to reinvigorate his cherry business at the 175 Dikeman St. site, which sells to big chain restaurants such as Red Lobster, Buffalo Wild Wings and TGI Friday.
The company had recently become infamous with locals for turning sugar-addicted neighborhood bees red after they sipped on the syrupy sweet confection.
Authorities wanted to get a warrant to search the place after getting tipped off that it was a front for a marijuana business, but when they couldn’t, they decided to try to do an end run through the Department of Environmental Protection, sources said.

Investigators from the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office and the DEP were technically searching the place for possible violations involving the dumping of waste when Mondella killed himself, sources said.
Mondella started out cooperative and calm during the several-hours-long search — until officials reached a room storing covered-up vintage vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce, a Porsche and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
There, they found the weird shelving and magnetically operated secret compartment behind it in the wall.

Behind the secret compartment, investigators discovered an entrance to a dug-out basement filled with three bags of marijuana.

“As soon as that door cracked, the aroma of marijuana was overwhelming,” the source said. “It looks like a cave, like they dug it out on their own.”

After Mondella shot himself with his .357 Magnum handgun in his personal bathroom and EMS was called around 1 p.m., authorities also recovered “hundreds of thousands of dollars” from the facility.
“Poor guy, in this day and age, you can do no jail time for marijuana,” a law enforcement source said. “I don’t know why he would do that, unless there’s something worse down there.”
Sources said investigators knew Mondella had a gun permit and should’ve asked him to hand over any weapons.
“If someone finds out that he had the gun on his belt and nobody took it from him, somebody’s got a problem,” a source said.

‘POOR GUY, IN THIS DAY AND AGE, YOU CAN DO NO JAIL TIME FOR MARIJUANA.’

Investigators also found generators inside the factory as well as cameras in “every little nook and crevice,” the source said. The building was outfitted with barbed wire and motion detector lights.
“All that points to guilt — you’re not protecting your cherries,” the source said. “He’s probably growing.”

The source added that before the bust, Mondella was “very paranoid” and “loved cocaine.” One neighbor said she always smelled weed on Coffey Street.
Mondella’s ex-wife, Yevgeniya, was devastated by the news and said she’d only known him to be a casual pot smoker.

One approach to MJ has made it legal and now its funding new schools

On this occasion the other approach was a total waste of LE man hours, likely a ton of money and motivated a father to commit suicide.

Tomorrow grass will still be available everywhere.

All this senseless, needless, disgraceful death of loved ones and utter destruction of their lives - all for a fucking plant which has been consumed by human beings around the world for thousands of years without it causing their civilizations to collapse because of its usage.

How much more innocent blood on the hands of two-faced politicians and crooked cops in America will it take before a majority of elected representatives with the power to directly help to stop this stagnant madness; this affront to freedom and liberty at a federal level will finally have the balls to contribute to the end of this legendary atrocity?

Countless harmless individuals who - for reasons probably having to do with genetic diversity, as well as personal tastes - didn't enjoy the intoxicating effects of Alcohol and/or Nicotine, but perhaps did so in the case of Cannabis, Psilocybin Mushrooms, Opium, Coca Leaves, or Khat - or other mind altering substance.

If it's true that what goes around generally ends up coming around sooner or later, then some of these prohibitionist pathological lairs who've personally voted for and/or signed into law pro-drug war policies such as Mandatory Minimums or Asset Forfeiture, then they are gonna be in suffer like they've not thought was humanly possible. And after witnessing the astonishing ignorance and arrogance of a few of these bought out twits supposedly representing the best interests of all their constituents, I will not lose a second of sleep over it. Damn you all to undoubtedly excruciating long term suffering fates, pro drug war politicians and bureaucrats with the blood of innocent men, women, and children on your hands.

I'm surprised they didn't first ask about his gun when going in, since le gathers all I tel possible they would have known he had a 357...but they missed that hand cannon hidden in an ankle holster..

Sad that the guys life ended like this...all for a plant. Ppl had to have a clue tho, people saw him driving in an all white rolls, among other cars, plus the smell of weed was strong from what I have read.

Shitty thing is they had an informant and basically gained access for a search on the pretext of possible illegal dumping BC all of the bees in Redhook were suxking down the cherry liquid and making gross tasting red "honey"

They were told to look around as Mich as possible and to try and find any sign of weed or a grow...soon as they found the basement that didn't exist on paper game was over...very sad story..it is Linda breaking bad, but Walter would have never taken his own life.
