This might be very stupid question, but my father told me that his friend's son became mentally ill which was caused by smoking weed daily for around 3-6 years and now he is treated in the mental hospital.
Is it possible that cannabis can cause a mental illness or could the cannabis trigger the mental illness which the person already had to come out at the full scale??

It can induce psychotic episodes in people with a predisposition to such conditions, who, it may turn out, are more predisposed to seeking out drugs like marijuana, but is not causally linked to mental illness such as schizophrenia

New study on marijuana use finds little evidence that the drug causes schizophrenia.

The study, published in Schizophrenia Research, and carried out at Harvard Medical School, compared families with and without a history of schizophrenia (Proal et al., 2013).

It comes in response to much research which has linked marijuana use with schizophrenia (e.g. Moore et al., 2007).

These previous studies, however, could not rule out the possibility that people who are prone to developing schizophrenia are also more likely to use marijuana.

In other words: marijuana may not cause schizophrenia, but it might be that people who are prone to developing schizophrenia are more likely to use marijuana. This would explain the link that’s been found in the studies.

In the new study, by comparing families with and without a history of marijuana use, the Harvard researchers were able to address this question.

They recruited four groups:

87 non-psychotic people who had used no drugs.
84 non-psychotic people who had used marijuana.
32 patients who had schizophrenia but hadn’t used drugs.
76 patients with schizophrenia who had used marijuana.
They then looked at the relatives of those with schizophrenia in comparison to the relatives of those in the control groups.

The results showed an increased risk of developing schizophrenia in the relatives of patients who already had schizophrenia, whether or not those patients used marijuana.

This study, then, finds no evidence that marijuana is associated with developing schizophrenia. The authors conclude that:

“…cannabis does not cause psychosis by itself. In genetically vulnerable individuals, while cannabis may modify the illness onset, severity and outcome, there is no evidence from this study that it can cause the psychosis.” (Proal et al., 2013).

Is it safe?

One study, of course, is not the end of this debate.

For one thing this study can’t tell us anything about the interaction between the genetic predisposition to develop schizophrenia and marijuana use.

Many researchers still believe that marijuana use may be a factor in the onset of schizophrenia in those who are at risk.

Certainly, there is plenty of other evidence out there that marijuana is not the totally safe drug that many teenagers perceive it to be.

IMO planting the seed of "this might send me crazy" is far worse than anything the plant does - my dad used to warn me of the same thing (he smoked) because my cousin turned schizophrenic in his teens after he started smoking pot, I still trip the fuck out that I'm having a psychotic experience on weed sometimes, mainly due to that same psychosomatic effect

It doesn't cause brain damage but it can make an already damaged brain (severe mental illness, etc) worse or can trigger dormant mental illnesses (weed is especially known for activating latent schizophrenia)

In fact new studies show that weed helps cell growth. It is true that sometime weed can bring out something like skitzophrenia in a person, however that would be to a person who will get it anyway, and it is understandable. If you never smoked weed before, being high can be overwhelming but when you understand what it's like, it can be a lot of fun, and can even be used to treat skitzophrenia (and many other things)

No. The only way your brain would get so fucked up that your forced to live in a mental institution is if the weed was dirty. Dealers will sometimes get their product in bulk from their supplier. The supplier will sometimes throw in a few pieces of an unknown substance which is to be given to any undesirable clients. The purpose of this undesirable product is to get rid of the client.

This is nearly certainly a load of pure, unadulterated horse-shit. There is nothing you can profitably 'spike' pot with, except for that shit growers use to bulk out the weight of the product but that's inert an most definitely doesn't give you psychosis.

CBD, the 2nd main active cannabinoid is a powerful anti-psychotic....

Marijuana does not mess with my schitso-affective diagnosis. However certian canabanoids will bring on an episode and I'll be chasing shadow people before you know it.

Some reason though I kinda like the attacks...

Now there was a official study done in the relation to marijuana smoke and brain cells found in monkeys. And it did decrease them

BUT!!

The study omits that the monkeys were hooked up to gas masks for up to 12 hours a day non stop

Proving nothing more that inhaling smoke for long periods at a time will decrease brain cell activity due to loss of oxygen.

Will our lords and masters ever stop their lying propaganda long enough to make an easier life for a stoner possible?

Of course it causes brain damage and increases the risk of psychosis. If you would, I strongly suggest searching for these answers. Honest skepticism is one thing, downright ignorance is quite another.
Do you know what it means when they say there is little evidence? That there is evidence.
