Can my doctor do this?

I've been on Tramadol for my back for 2months now. I've never had it on repeat prescription, however when I was getting low I was able to go back to the doctor and tell them, "I'm low on my painkillers would it be possible to have another prescription" and they always said "yes here you go come back when your low again" however. Today I went in to see the doctor. And I told him that "the Tramadol isn't working quite as well as they used to, still working but just not quite doing what they originally did". So all he told me to do was to up my Amitriptyline dosage at night from 10mg to 20mg. He didn't give me another prescription for Tramadol.

I now have none left. Is he aloud to do this? Won't I get withdrawals if I just stop taking them cold turkey? I have terrible anxiety issues already. But the doctor doing this makes me extremely anxious that I may have some awful withdrawal symptoms? This particular doctor was a different one to the one I normally see.

My psychiatrist told me to stick to 10mg of Amitriptyline a night originally because of possible complications with me being on 20mg of Citalopram a day. He told me to keep taking the Tramadol as usual. And to get back to him in 3 weeks. But as you can see, those plans have been altered by a different doctor.

Up the Amitriptyline. Have no Tramadol. And just see what happens. I am not comfortable doing this and it's gradually making my anxiety worse. So can someone please tell me, should I go back and tell someone that my supply of Tramadol has completely ran out or should I just wing it and think yea yea whatever he's a doctor he must know best.
Thank you for taking the time to read all this.
All advice is appreciated.

Whoa that sounds pretty screwed up, in a short answer no that doctor should not have tried to alter your medications as long as you're under the care of another doctor. Why couldn't you contact your normal doc? And withdrawals depend on how long you've been on a drug and how much/often you were dosing. Tramadol shouldn't be too terribly bad but then again I've WD'd off of oxymorphone before too so that's just an objective opinion coming from me. Sounds to me like you need to find a way to contact your primary doc ASAP.

I agree with delrio. Like him tho I've also withdrawn from oxymorphone and that was hell but tramadol WD shouldn't be bad. How long has it been since you took your last dose and how are you feeling.

My usual doctor is the community psychiatric nurse, and he can be difficult to get appointments with. When I rang my Doctor surgery today they only had "sit and wait" appointments. Meaning if you have a sit and wait at 4oclock. You go at 4 and it could be any doctor/nurse/if he's there the psychiatrist. Of course all of the patients notes etc etc are all logged on the system. They know what other doctors have said to me. They know what medications I'm on and all that jazz.

So I wasn't to phased when this Dr called my name today. Until he altered the mentioned predicament I'm in. It's been three days, touching four now it's 23:35 here now.

Yesterday and the day before I felt incredibly anxious. My back hurt a little more than usual. I feel unsociable. I feel cold. And at times dizzy. Very mild visual hallucinations for eg, if I look at a carpet, wall or ceiling I see many clear coloured wavey swirls, but I'm unsure if that's my newly given Amitriptyline? I understand blurred vision is common though. I feel restless/unable to sit still. And my mood is lower than usual. And for some reason my dreams seem very aggression related. I also keep forgetting/losing track of thought. As you can probably tell with my current typing. I don't know maybe I'm overthinking this post. However I've read Tramadol WD is or can be as bad as Oxycontin or Oxycodone. And this. Regardless of everything else I've said. Makes me anxious the most. By the way my dosage was 400-500mg a day of Tramadol. Sorry for this post being all over the place. My minds a little scrambled. Thank you for your input so far.

Update: getting very itchy. No specific place. Just generally itchy.

Karbon where are you located? I can only speak from an American point of view but I would recommend finding you a dedicated doctor to avoid any more predicaments like you're in now getting passed around doctors like an orphan.

I'm in England. I can request the same doctor/my psychiatrist when I make an appointment but it's a rare occasion that the appointment is in the time period I require. For eg. If I go tomorrow. They may say the next available appointment would be a week away, if that's no good I can ask for a different doctor/nurse, but again if they're booked up I'd have to settle with a "sit and wait" appointment as previously mentioned in my other post. I'm going to try and sleep now as its 01:55. So I'll reply to any advice given tomorrow. Thank you for you help so far though.

It's not really that bizarre.

You see, this combination would be very dangerous for someone who is naive to each chemical, but if you are already tolerance to tramadol it's probably a lot safer than that.

That being said, it still holds true that Doctors merely experiment on their patients. Always have. Best to make sure you have a good doctor.

^^Agree with DelRio, but what do I know? :\

I have a "pain management" specialist who chairs our local hospital's pain center. He is certifiable bat shit crazy IMO. I have a laundry list of medical problems resulting from trauma, stage 4 disease and surgeries/chemo to treat disease. All of this "blocks" my bowels, whether it's lesions or adhesions. The pain meds we've tried have made GI problems worse. I'm in so much pain, I can't live...yet I continue to awake every day to do it all again.

Tramadol at those doses is extremely dangerous, as it affects the serotonin levels. You are risking a seizure, Karbon. Please reconsider.

I can attest firsthand to what DixiChik said about the tramadol. I was taking high doses years ago and after about a week of it, I had a grand mal seizure going down the highway. Thank God I wasn't driving. I woke up 2 days later not having a clue about what happened until all the details were filled in for me. Tramadol was the only thing that showed up on my drug screen they did in the ER and I had to own up to it. My stupid self was taking it in place of my regularly prescribed hydrocodone to hold me over till my next refill and stave off WDs. Needless to say that was a bad, bad idea. If you can and feel comfortable doing so, it wouldn't hurt to ask to be switched to something less dangerous, especially with you taking SSRI/SNRI drugs with it. Good luck karbon and keep us updated. Most of us have been in a similar position at some point. It'll get better.

I put in an urgent prescription request earlier today. Pick them up tomorrow. My arms and hands are red raw from all the itching. Is this normal withdrawal? Or am I over reacting? I'll definitely bare in mind what you've all said a out seizures. I'm sorry to hear about both of your stories. And yea very lucky you weren't driving delrio. Stay strong dixichik I'm sure things will get better.

So annoyed wasted hours of today waiting for my prescription to be ready. Finally get to the pharmacy and they tell me I can't have it till 22ND. Wish they would have told me that earlier today ??

Wow that's BS. Don't feel bad though that's a worldwide problem, happens here alot too. Sometimes they don't even tell you that they're out of the medicine and can't fill it until you show up to pick it up days later!

Na, they can't do that. You can have seizures if your prone to them. I think that's messed up. You need to get back on the tramadol because cold turkey means the doctor has no clue what he/she is doing. You never go ct on anything. I have to inform my doctors how fragile my brain is and if they alter anything it's got to be small decreases at a time. Try to go to the ER and tell them what this stupid Doctor did. I think it's royally screwed up they did that. Please keep us informed on what happens.

Yes, doctors can do that--in fact, doctors are generally given wide leeway to do a lot of things that they think is best for their patients-- but that doctor can't stop you from going to a different doctor and using your standard Tramadol refill line on him or her, either.

Picked my Tramadol up today. Feel loads better. Also the time be had off of them has given my tolerance time to lower itself abit. So not only is it getting rid of my pain but they're chilling me out so much too. It's good to be back. Even though it was roughly a week without them.

Didn't know that cold turkey can give you seizures, I'll remember that.
Thank you all for your advice and concern.
