Buspirone as a neurotrophic

I have heard that buspirone, in theory, should be an excellent neurotrophic due to its 5-HT1a receptor agonism. I'm presently recovering from some head trauma and have noticed that this medication (rx'd for anxiety) seems to speed up the process and possibly stimulate neuroplasticity. However, this is all conjecture and this could well be just the placebo effect and normal healing. I'm not sure anyone could answer this with any degree of certainty but could buspirone stimulate neuron growth in a healthy individual?

This article is of some relevance: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9051259

Buspirone is a 5-HT1A partial agonist at postsynaptic receptors. Therefore, it might block the neutotrophic effect of serotonin.

A relatively new finding is that the combination of buspirone and melatonin seems to promote neurogenesis, and also acts as an antidepressant. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/709266

I'm soon going to try this combination for my depression and anxiety, because I'm recovering from addiction and I don't have the willpower to use other anxiolytics (benzos, pregabalin) as prescribed without abusing them.

Interesting.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I just took myself off clonazepam because I don't like the idea of relying on something so dependence forming to deal with anxiety. The anxiolytic effects of buspirone are very subtle though. Cannabis and exercise are what I rely on for the brunt of my anxiety. I actually came across that article before. Maybe I'll try adding melatonin to my diet at night.

Thanks for the info.

melatonin really helps me get over that morning "oh noo's have to go outside " anxiety. Nothing is as good at killing anxiety as a good sleeping pattern.

I take abilify and melatonin same principle , it's also a (slight) 5 ht 1 a agonist and d2-4 antagonist (correct me if i am wrong which is likely) , is there any sense to my reasoning?
