Brief DOC Psychosis?

I am choosing to write this trip report, after watching a very close friend of mine have an extremely negative reaction to the drug 2,5-dimethoxy-4-chloroamphetamine (AKA DOC). I'm not sure if "Psychosis" would be the word to describe it, but it is clear that his body/mind did not react to the substance in the same way everyone else had that was present at the time. We had all taken 1 "hit" of an unknown dosage of DOC blotter that was obtained through a trusted source.

Let me begin by stating that my intentions for this report are to get a better understanding of an extremely “Bad Trip” a close friend of mine experienced while on the chemical 4-Chloro-2,5-dimethoxy-Amphetamine. I am writing the report, as I was one of 4 other people present at the time, and one of 4 people that were on the same dose of the same drug as him (1 “hit” of DOC blotter paper). My experience with drugs is pretty thorough, especially in the area of psychedelics. I have had experience with DXM, Psilocybin Mushrooms, LSD, DOI, MDA, MDMA, N,N-DMT, 4-aco-dmt, and a few others I may have missed. My friend who had the bad experience (we’ll call him F) has had moderate experience with psychedelics including Psilocybin Mushrooms, LSD, MDA, and 2ci. In total there were 5 of us together that night, and I would say we are all close enough to consider each other family.

On to the experience, I will do my best to give accurate times for everything.

T+ 0:00 – The night starts like any other, a few friends (K, R, and myself) take a drive down to visit F, a very close friend that we haven’t seen in a while, and his girlfriend C. I’d say around 9:30pm we each ingested 1 hit of DOC blotter. It was obtained through a trusted source, but the dosage was something we did not know, so we figured 1 would be a safe starting point. K was the only person out of us who had tested this particular blotter, and had a very enjoyable experience though he mentioned having to “talk his friend down” a few times, who was also on 1 hit.

T+ 0:30 – I begin feeling “off”, getting mildly anxious about the experience that is ahead of me. Nothing too intense, but I can definitely tell that I have ingested a chemical, and it is working in my body.

T+ 0:50 – K walks outside and begins to puke, a few minutes prior he had stated that he was getting some pretty intense visuals already.

T+ 1:00 – I step outside to give K some company, and to get some fresh air because I was feeling uneasy. K mentions that he had thrown up, and almost immediately after hearing that I began to purge. The timing was very weird, to where we both considered it could have been placebo that made me feel sick.

T+ 1:10 – F steps outside, and asks K and I to come inside. I could tell he was a little uncomfortable with us being outside while tripping, but everything seemed normal. I was beginning to get some visuals at this point.

T+ 1:20 –I return inside to sit on the couch, I am not enjoying myself at this point, but I try to keep to myself to keep from making anyone feel uncomfortable. I have dealt with uncomfortable trips in the past, and this was no different at the time. I am experiencing the WORST muscle tremors from any drug I’ve ever ingested, they were non-stop mostly in my thighs/calves for at least an hour and a half.

From here on, I don’t keep much track of time, other than the occasional glance at the clock.

Soon after I return inside, K comes in as well. He looks like he is tripping pretty hard, but he seemed to be enjoying himself. F also seemed to be in the ordinary for a little while. At some point within the hour, F stripped down to his boxers, and jumped in my lap on the couch. I think this is when he got the look in his face that I could only describe as “Deer in the headlights with a big smile”. He was acting very odd, but I didn’t think much of it since I haven’t tripped with him much in the past, and we are VERY close friends, I figured he was just being funny. After sitting on the couch for a moment, he got up, and walked to the back of the house. He started pacing back and forth through the house at this point, and began saying things like “Holy Shit! I don’t know what the fuck is going on”. He didn’t really seem scared at the time, but just like he was having an insane time.

After things progressively got weirder with F, K pulled me out of the house, and told me that something was not right. At first I wasn’t sure how serious he was, but he started to point out that F was repeatedly going through his daily tasks. F enjoys playing World of Warcraft, and Call of Duty. He also is very artistic, and spends a good amount of time drawing. While pacing around the house, he would say something like “Dude, naw seriously I want to play World of Warcraft”, walk up to his computer, bang on a few buttons, click the mouse a few times, stand up and start pacing again. A few seconds later he would say something like “I need a cigarette” or “Let’s smoke weed!”, and try to walk outside. We would divert his attention away from the door so he would come back in, and he would instantly see something else and change his mind. “Dude I wanna play black ops” put his gaming headset on, pick up his controller, mash a few buttons... “Naw fuck that I need to eat”, he would walk to the fridge, grab a bottle of soda, take a swig, stick it back in the fridge, walk back into the living room, and start the loop all over. At one point, he said he wanted to hear some music, and when we turned it on, he started singing in a very loud high pitched voice, and playing the belly drum. I also remember him peaking out his window at this point, and saying "call the police I don't give a fuck!!". (this was before we had even spoken of calling anyone for help)

Each time he started the loop over, it would get worse, and he would seem to be more confused. At first when going to the fridge, he would just take a sip of soda, or grab a water bottle. Over time, he would take a sip of soda, then toss the bottle across the kitchen. The next time he returned to the kitchen, he pulled out a bottle of hot sauce, chugged a little of that, and threw that on the floor. This went on for over an hour until the house was covered in Queso dip, Fresh squeezed mango juice, water, hot sauce, and all sorts of other things. F has all tile floors in his house, so while in this state he is constantly slipping on the floor, falling over things, and at one point even ran across the house just to slide across the kitchen (What the fuck?!?!?!). Everything his eyes locked on, it seemed like he had to grab, and then toss across the room while yelling something. At one point he grabbed a pair of scissors, and yelled “I need to smoke this cigarette!”. He began running into walls, flipping over chairs, and slipping all over the floors, and none of this was enough to bring him out of this loop he was experiencing.
It was at this point that we decided we needed to call paramedics for help, the situation had escalated from being just really weird, to being dangerous. F was clearly not able to understand what was going on. We tried multiple times to tell him that he had taken a drug, and that he needed to relax. He would recognize who was talking to him, say something like “Dude I love you!” and immediately go back into his manic pacing loop pattern. We could not keep his attention for more than 5 seconds at a time, and the more we tried to restrain him, the more he seemed to get agitated. We tried to hold him in his bedroom as a last resort (I had told K earlier I thought it was a bad idea to hold him down, since he was not yet panicking), but this ended up with F holding K in a chokehold trying to escape.
I called 911, and notified them of the situation, I told them we had all taken “Acid” (to avoid questioning), and were all on the same dose, but he had a much more serious reaction than us. When the cops arrived, we were holding the door shut from the outside to keep F from opening the door and running out, which he had tried multiple times by this point, the police asked us to open the door, and told F to step over. F immediately says “Naw seriously, fuck that”(a phrase he had been saying all night), he lunged toward a cop, and then about 8 of them proceeded to kick him and bring him to the ground. While being beat to the ground, he was still yelling the same nonsense he was while he was inside, he even blurted out “naw, fuck that lets smoke WEEED!” to the officers multiple times while battling them on the ground.
Eventually the ambulance arrived, and gave him some sort of shot to calm him down so they could put him on the stretcher. After the police left around 4am, we returned in the house to start cleaning it up. Almost all of the furniture was soaked in juices, or completely flipped over, there were cigarettes all over the floor, and nothing seemed to be where it belonged. We all tried to sleep once the sun came up, but I’m pretty sure nobody got more than 2 hours of solid sleep. Once everyone woke up, we began the search for F, we called all of the hospitals around to find him but could not locate him. Finally around 2pm we got a call from a hospital once F was able to remember his girlfriends phone number. We immediately went to visit him, and his first question to us was “what the fuck happened”. He did not remember anything at that point. He soon told us that when he woke up in the hospital, he was not able to remember his name, or where he was. By 7pm that night, we were on our way home with F, and he was in good spirits other than being bruised, and swollen from battling the cops.

EDIT:
After speaking with F for a few minutes, he came up with a little more information to add:

From my point of view I remembered getting really solid open eyed and closed eye visuals. The actions that were stated above while I was pacing around were as if I was on auto-pilot and can only recall very small instances. Almost a complete black out while having really vivid hallucinations. One's that I can describe, but probably shouldn't bother. Those things are a bit more personal, I suppose.

I woke up in the hospital, my estimated time was probably at 6-7am to see nurses and doctors standing around me laughing and throwing questions at me. What I took, where I was, what's my name, etc. Typical Dr's questions. But at this time, I was still 'tripping' seeing their faces distort, swivel, and mush together. Pattern's on their clothes dripping, etc. Much like an acid trip. As stated above, I could not recall my name, whereabouts, names, etc. I ended up being hooked up to an IV and catheter as well as being given constant vitals tests to check my heart rate (which was obviously high due to the amphetamine). I kept insisting that I was good to go and demanded to be released, which of course.. they weren't buying the story and only to be burdened with answer such as " No you need to remain in the hospital until your vitals return to normal". But eventually admitting that I could sign a waver to be released without the hospital being held accountable. Until about 2pm approximately 17 hours after the DOC was ingested. pupils totally dilated. A psychiatrist walked into the ICU to question my sanity, I passed. At around 3pm K, C, J, and R all arrived to the ICU to find me strapped to a hospital bed bound by my wrists because I was a threat to hospital staff. A couple hours go by with the nurses still testing vitals and questioning my sanity. Finally, progress is made when I'm moved to a different part of the hospital. By this time K, R, and J have been asked to vacate the ICU due to visiting hours being over. Only C (my girlfriend) got to stay.

At the other section of the hospital I was being watched by a single nurse that after a mere 30 minutes I asked the nurse if I could sign the waver to be released. Vitals appearing to be stabling, unhooked the IV and F signed my own release at approximately 6-7pm.

-----------------------------------------------

I've been a long time lurker of BL. It is one of my normal stops when I am researching a new chemical of any kind (B & D threads are my favorite<3), I know the forums are filled with some extremely smart people, so I would just like to get a few opinions on what may have happened to my friend. I've heard of these drugs bringing out underlying mental illnesses in some users, but as far as we know F has no mental illnesses, and he was basically baseline by the same time everyone else in the group was back to baseline. Even the cops had asked us when they arrived "he must be on 6-7x as much as you guys right?", WRONG he was on the exact same dose as us but for some reason had a much stronger interaction. This trip did not seem to be fueled by fear, and I don't believe set/setting would have made much of a difference (we were all pretty comfortable with the situation, and VERY pumped about it). From my point of view at the time, it did not look like he was "tripping", to me, it just seemed like his body was on autopilot the whole night, blurting out random phrases, and doing random things that made completely no sense.

Any input/opinions on what my friend may have experienced would be greatly appreciated.

He was just in a really intense thought loop, idk what you really could have done to calm him down besides just catch it as its coming on and try and get him to remain calm and assure him he's not dreaming and his actions have consequences

maybe there was not the same amount of doc on the blotters? afaik laying blotters is pretty complicated and its easy to fuck it up...

Honestly, catching it before it happened seems like the only possible thing that could have helped.. Once he was in it, there was no talking him down. We would grab his hand, put an arm around him and try and talk to him, and his attention span was like a 2 year olds, the second he broke eye contact that was it..

I've thought about this too, but it still wouldn't make sense to me. If I remember correctly, the most chemical you can fit onto a blotter is 3mg, meaning that is the absolute highest dose he could have gotten. From the information I've gotten from the B&D DOC threads, 3mg seems like it should be a manageable trip. I think the problem was something more than the dose on the paper.

Thanks for the quick replies guys, this is really bothering me. :/

i've heard of other people having similar reactions, particularly with mushrooms. I can't really add anything, i have no idea why this happens, even with people who have tripped many times before. I'm sure that was very rough to deal with especially while tripping yourself, but i'm glad you made sure he was okay and didn't get into any serious trouble.

I think somehow people in this state get to thinking that they are in a dream world with no consequences as someone mentioned above. I've seen and heard some ridiculous things happen to people in this state. One example included a guy completely stripping down naked and tying a mouse and keyboard around his genitals and then going out in public, after completely smashing everything in his dorm room. For him, he had a realization that nothing was real and that nothing mattered, so there were no consequences to his actions.

I've almost put myself into a state like that as well, I had very similar feelings about the nature of reality. I guess it's just part of the unpredictability of psychedelics. Hope your friend is okay and good job for doing the right thing in taking care of him.

I've experienced really nasty loop patterns once on a 5g dose of B+ Cubensis, but that is the only thing I have to compare to this experience. The thing that was so different, was while I was experiencing the loop I was just sitting down. My thoughts were the only thing looping, and I could not escape it, but at no point did I loose touch with reality and start acting on the loop. Obviously everyone reacts differently to different drugs, but I am starting to believe part of what fueled the madness was the fact that we were dealing with an amphetamine. Doesn't seem too far off that could have something to do with the manic behavior.

My friend is actually keeping an eye on this thread, because he obviously wants to know what happened with him as well. He's back in work now, and this all happened Thursday night-Friday morning, so I'd say he's doing pretty well considering the situation. Thanks for the concerns, and for the input.
:]

That's a truly superb report! Well written & horoughly detailed. You should try get it up on Erowid. Might be interesting if you went through it with F, maybe re-write it from his point onf view.

Anyway, there really was nothing you could do. If perhaps one of the party had been sober, possibly outside intervention could have been brought a bit earlier but I expect the outcome would have been little different. Shit like this DOES happen, & wth psyches as powerful as DOC, when someone gets stuck in, they're stuck there for AGES. The single biggest danger with Psychedelics is that they can cause a temporary or even a semi-permanent psychosis. Nothing can help in these situations except physical restraint & forced administration of a powerful, IV Benzo. Not something I'd want anyone other than the professionals to handle.

The cause? Hmmmmm Other than some latent psychological issue for F (sorry F, no offence intended), which for some strange reason has never appeared during previous trips, or some idiosyncratic reaction to DOC itself, the cause of this event is most likely to be dose related.

So Budman, good job with such a detailed report. I hope F has not suffered any lingering problems. It might be wise to swear off any psychoactives for a bit & in future for F to consider only the lightest of hallucnogens, acurrately measured & dosed very, very carefully. That's of course IF you or he are EVER going to risk that shit again!

Thank you, I appreciate the kind words. I have spent many years reading up trip reports on Erowid, so the format has kind of stuck with me. I'm glad you found it an interesting read. I am definitely planning on putting it up on Erowid in the near future, I just want it to be as complete as possible when it goes up. I have only read of one other report that seemed similar to this: 7 Cops & One Bad Trip. Before trying the drug, I had read countless trip reports where people seemed to really enjoy this substance, and very few people reported any ill effects. I just want people to be informed that this kind of thing can happen, and it was particularly messy with DOC being the fuel he was running on. I don't know much about pharmacology, but this seemed like a reaction specific to the DOC, rather than just a typical bad trip from being too intense.

As far as my journey with psychedelic drugs, it's far from over. I am taking this as a lesson learned about the substances I am putting into my body, but I knew these kind of things could happen before so I will not let it change my view on the use of psychedelics. They have helped me learn things about myself, and my surroundings that I would have never been able to understand without them, and I am very thankful for that. I will definitely be taking new precautions when ingesting any new substances for sure though, I am not walking away from this unchanged.

I guess there must be someone, someplace who's gonna lose it on some drug, some time. Happens to the best of us, like. F just drew the short straw this time. If you're relatively certain that the dose was reasonable, then it's simply that his system that didn't like Doc.

I'd have to agree with that at this point.
We have access to some fairly potent LSD blotter (1 is enough for anyone to get notable effects, smaller people have full blown experiences on just 1), and he has never had any problems managing his trips on 2 of those, or on fairly strong doses of other psychedelics. With this it wasn't a matter of "handling" his trip, his trip was handling him..

EDIT:
I'd also like to add at this point that the name of this drug is VERY misleading. DOC is in no way/shape/form my Drug of Choice.

I've definitely been stuck in a pacing thought loop a few times. Mushrooms seem to create these no attention span thought loops for me. I've never tried DOC. My most recent was on 25mg 4-HO-MET where I paced my driveway and garage multiple times attempting to grab a water bottle, sit down, put some music on, and burn one. The driveway was paced at least 12 times without much being accomplished. Thank god for my girlfriend who came out and asked what the hell I was doing. After explaining my master plan and my battles with infinity, she tells me, "Sit the hell down and pack the damn bowl!" Effectively kicking me out of the loop. I've never had a blackout experience though, so I can't really comment on the psychosis. I know a stimulating psych can really get the mind spinning. I hope everything turns out good for you and f. Be safe guys.

Whoa that sounds intense man! So far all of my trips of to this point have been very manageable, and I've only experienced the looping on mushrooms, and it was just my thoughts, no actions. LSD has never given me looping patterns really, it honestly seems to do quite the opposite. Instead of my mind being trapped in one thought loop, I find myself unable to stay even close to on subject with my thoughts for one second because they seem to branch out of control. The problem with that is I just feel like I can't shut it off, but that really isn't a problem, i'm usually fighting to feel the lingering effects of a nice L trip :]
I envy the fact that you have been able to get a hold of a substance as uncommon as 4-ho-MET, that is one I need to spend a little more time reading about!
Thanks for the input my friend.

I've experienced thought loops on LSD. They were more like a gibberish loop. This was on a high dose.

Psychs have at times helped me the most when a certain subject comes to mind multiple times during a trip. It allows me to analyze the thought/situation from multiple perspectives, with my previous conclusions/realizations still in my memory, helping me better understand my conclusion. Almost like asking multiple people for advice, each one with a little more experience with that problem.

Sorry for the off topic rant.

I'd also like to add at this point that the name of this drug is VERY misleading. DOC is in no way/shape/form my Drug of Choice.

That's not what the name of this drug stands for. The C refers to the chlorine atom that distingishes DOC from other drugs in this family, like DOB (bromine atom) and DOI (iodine atom).

Plus of course, Shulgin, who named this compound (I believe) likes to thumb his nose at the "pharmacuetical establishment" & the "establishment" in general. Calling such a powerful psychedelic compound Doc(tor) is quite endearing don't you think?

The thumbing continues with some people referring to 4-ho-met (mentioned above & also a Shulgin molecule) as "metocin"... get it? Medicine? Lol

Sorry, I'll get my coat...

We had all taken 1 "hit" of an unknown dosage of DOC blotter that was obtained through a trusted source.

Here's your first problem, it's very likely the blotters were laid unevenly. It sounds to me like he was just on a very high dose and having a bad trip. I've seen people who have taken 8mg and been perfectly fine take 4mg and end up in the hospital. With psychedelics it's all about dose, set, and setting. Most people consider a trip to be temporary psychosis. It's not, just the effects of the drug. Sometimes the can be easily controlled other times not so much.

That sounds pretty horrific but reactions like this are bound to happen occasionally since everybody's chemistry is slightly different.

About his amnesia, is it possible that the shot the medics gave him could have caused this? Making him less able to remember his thoughts, motivations and actions at the time.

Haha, I understand that is not what the name of the drug actually stands for ;). Thanks for clarifying for anyone I might have led astray by that comment, though.

That is actually what I was thinking, they mentioned giving him IV valium, and from my personal experience with benzos I don't see how it COULDN'T have effected his memory.

We've thought about that, but like I stated earlier in the thread I believe that the max amount of a chem blotter can hold is ~3mg, so that is the absolute highest dose he could have taken correct? I'm thinking what myself and the others were experiencing would be more along the lines of what I would expect from a 2-3mg dose of this drug. I don't know, maybe I'm naive?

were the blotters perforated?

to me it sounds like those blotters had possibly more than 3 mg.

I had some white DOC blotters that were perforated and dosed 1mg each and both of my friends who had only 2 didn't really feel anything.

this.
anything can happen from one drop to the next. ANYTHING. You NEVER know...

I think I could fit more than 3mg of chemicals on to a blotter if I was careful enough. I don't believe there is a universal rule as to what a blotter can hold. I think what a botter can hold depends on how it was laid.

It's all about how the drop dries. If there is 3mg in the drop and the drop all dries on the paper, all the 3mg will be on the paper. I could probably get 5mg of a given water soluble chemical onto a piece of paper in this manner. Maybe 10 if it was a larger size blotter perforation.

Another thing is I'm not so sure about all this legal drug vender stuff either.
You might get chemicals accidentally mixed and not even know if you are dosing the right chemicals etc etc etc.

People have to be really careful here... playing with fire.
