While Colorado and Washington legalized recreational marijuana use last year, and 19 other states plus the District of Columbia allow legal pot for medical use, there’s one way, all across the country, to use the drug with little if any fear of consequences: Be white.

Across the country, even though blacks and whites use marijuana at more or less the same rate, black people are almost four times more likely to be arrested for it.

According to a report released by New York’s attorney general last week, the number-one reason for arresting people stopped under New York’s controversial “stop and frisk” law was marijuana possession. And 87 percent of the people nabbed for pot possession after a “stop and frisk” were black or Latino.

And if you were white, or for that matter Asian, and you were unlucky enough to get arrested for having some marijuana on you, you were 50 percent more likely to have a court throw out your case than if you were black, the report showed.

New York Times reporter Jim Dwyer wrote a column last week, openly confessing his daring crime of carrying four marijuana cookies and a “a few pinches” of the loose “herb” in his backpack as he walked across the city. He said that he was carrying it for a friend to give to a few people for medical purposes. New York does not allow medical marijuana use.

As he strolled toward his subway stop, Dwyer, a self-described middle-aged white guy, wondered what would happen if he got caught.

“It is your age that would make you most unusual for an arrest,” Harry Levine, a Queens College sociologist who studies pot busts, told Dwyer. “If you were a 56-year-old white woman, you might get to be the first such weed bust ever in New York City — except, possibly, for a mentally ill person.”

According to a recent nationwide study by the American Civil Liberties Union, marijuana offenses account for 52 percent of all drug arrests in the United States. In other words, if marijuana was simply legalized nationwide, the country’s illegal drug problem would be cut in half overnight.

The ACLU found that blacks are arrested 3.73 times more often for marijuana possession than whites, even though people of both races use marijuana as similar rates, and among 18- to 25-year-olds, whites use pot more often. See the graphs below for the stats.

^ That video is so good!

By those statistics, 1 in 3 people aged 18-25 have actually reported so have smoked at some time in the last 12 months?

That's actually a lot, considering there's be millions more that wouldn't want to admit that on a cencus/survey.

Now trying to imagine EU/Oceania percentages....

You accidently reposted fig. 22 instead of the figure with the arrest numbers.

White is good, but white, intelligent, well educated, affluent, and good looking is like wizardry.

Really? i thought being a white woman mean't you can get away with practically everything

Then you really haven't thought this through, I would say.

Try drinking one beer too many at a college party.
Man? Fall asleep. Woman? Be gang-raped.

Try walking alone in a non-white neighborhood after dark, as a woman.
Or even just walking alone....

IMO some of the "white people drugs" like mushrooms seem under prosecuted in the USA in relativity to their popularity. Maybe it's because there is no brother they can blame?

Powder cocaine and methamphetamine are traditionally pretty white drugs in america and they are prosecuted aggressively.. Boomer just aren't very prevalent and cause little problems. High end grass has allot of white producers and consumers and is legal though.

That article is BULLSHIT. Being white doesn't matter at all, cops are actually told to arrest people that look like they have money so they can try and seize their cars and property. Being white if anything makes you MORE OF A TARgEt...

^^ EXACTLY! Has NOT SHIT TO DO WITH RACE.. it only has to do with how much money you got, if you don't have enough then its off to the private prison system.. They don't care if your innocent or not, the prosecutors for the state are trained to throw you in jail and/or drain all your money.

did anyone else giggle at the fact that the graph depicts whites as the colour "pink" and blacks as, well... black?

...kytnism...:|

Being able to get a good lawyer is based on how much money you have.
Unless I am very mistaken, I think it is common knowledge that, statistically, Whites are richer, on the average, than Blacks, in the US.
And if you think being white makes you more of a target, you don't know about all the other studies that show that whites are far, far less likely to be arrested for drugs.
Did you not see the data in the article? Are you arguing against the data, somehow? Or simply stating something that you heard, as fact, without any backing, and saying that the article is bullshit because it goes against that (unproven) fact?

Being white is the best defense against everything.

Tell that to OJ, R Kelly, and Michael Jackson...

Or is it that people don't consume mushrooms with the same intensity as say crack cocaine and people aren't blatantly selling mushrooms on the corner in the ghetto? Even though the supply of mushrooms is blatant at festivals its not done on the streets of America in the same way that some other drugs are sold and used.
