Aspergers Syndrome Treatment

My mate (who is also a bluelighter believe it or not), is prescribed the following

30mg Dexamphetamine sulfate per day
6mg Clonazepam

There are other medications but none quite so abused as those two. He's also a struggling heroin addict - and I haven't been able to sway him from this path. Sad.

Miss ya Ben, it's gonna kill you to find out the love of your life ended her own yesterday mate :(

Ive been told that i have aspergers, although i thought everybody just thought the same as me hahahah, but then thats one of the problems isnt it. I found that dex has helped with concentration, attention, social anxiety and a host of other problems yet i cant see how it would be usefull in this situation, Realy it could be more of a hinderance due to the fact that you would already be very seated in your veiw of the world and if anything it would just make you express this more intently.. but again thats just my opinion, ill write up another post when i drag myself home from work later lol.... it would be good to here from any other aspies on here lol-if ur on here im sure we share some very similar interests hahaha, some of which have gotten me in trouble in the past but hey thats life lol..
also tangerino-how did you find psycs to help with you thought process, ive been meaning to delve into it for a while now but havent heard many 1st hand open reports by somone who will admit that have aspergers and how its helped.
thanks

In year 3, my mum tells me i had extreme trouble coping with change in the routine my teacher made in the morning, instead of doing spelling first he chose to do maths instead and I became very anxious, and had difficulty settling to the point I could not comply. My behavior was very strange also.

My teachers would always complain that i would be constantly daydreaming and unable to focus on one thing, I still experience that to this day, for example I would go to email something to someone, and my mind runs a million miles a second while walking to the printer that emails, and i end up faxing it instead. I also forget to do things alot and that causes problems at work.

It affects my work performance to the point I resign in a quick time frame every time, I am extremely anxious being with more than one person no matter how well I know them. I was lost on the way to my mums house and even though I had a road map book with me and had my mum on the phone, my stress levels were so high I got extremely angry and just felt like yelling and screaming. This makes me quite depressed at times.

Extreme difficulty coping in social settings, it really is quite debilitating and I doubt I will find coping mechanisms apart from drugs TBH, although I will keep trying non drug therapies but I seriously think my fucked up mind will not be able to cope without drugs which is a worry.

wow! and i thought i was the only one who keeps resigning from jobs to avoid the anxiety, and the dislike of being with more then one person at a time, A?ND the going to do one task and ending up doing somthing else, fark i hate the feeling of a million thoughts racing around but not being able to "decode" them so to speek

I was never clinically diagnosed with Asperger's, but I fit all the symptoms, and my mother and my dads mom believe I have it also.

Would this be something that a doctor would miss?

I think if I would of been properly diagnosed then maybe I would of understood why I am not like all the other kids, and it led me into depression and in my teenage years huge rebellion and drug use.

I have learned to except I am really odd, and don't understand people too much. I like the weird ways now and embrace them, but some people get offended and don't understand when I say something innapropriate like, "Hey how does my hair look?" I would respond if I didn't like it "I don't think it looks very well, it makes your cheeks chubby I liked your other hair cut." To me that is normal, because I am answering a question with my answer, but I guess to normal social people it is odd. I don't intend to be rude or disrupt, but sometimes I do on accident.

People and social behavior are like a science to me I try to study them, so I can figure out how to behave normally in big groups of strangers instead of being quit and withdrawn. It is difficult, and hard to grasp. I never understood why everyone else does it naturally. To me it is like a game where I strategically need to think of topics, and have good responses and execute them at the right time.

Sarcasm is also really hard for me to grasp, and I tend to look puzzled and then people feel nervous, because they think that I think I am angry. They always say lighten up, but really I am confused, and don't know how to respond so I stare blankly at them. I don't find it funny, or offensive, and don't know how to respond to their sarcastic joke. I am very gullible too. I guess all kinds of girls like me and I wouldn't find out until years later, and they said they would always drop subtle hints, but I took it as they wanted to be my friend and were really nice, not because they had a crush on me.

I guess I am just assuming I have it since it isn't clinically diagnosed, but it would be a relief in a way if I knew for sure, because if not then I am just really unique and socially backward guy. Nobody understands this, because I am a tall 6 3 and work out, and not to be to into myself, but I am a very above average looking guy. I look like a GQ magazine guy, so it is shocking when I let people know I am super shy and socially awkward, because I look like an outgoing jock type of guy, but act like a "nerd".

I just wrote a lengthy post but BL was down as I submitted and lost it all.... So I will keep it breif.

Hello All, Please note i am not simply trying to source drugs, rather fix a mental health issue.

I have been diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome as a child, never had many friends and was always the quiet one. I also stress out extremely easy over the smallest things, among other symptoms. I was prescribed dexamphetamine to help me with CBT but did not like the idea of being on medications so I never took them. The CBT obviously didn't work because of my severe debilitating anxiety.

As I grew older, took on more responsibilities, the Aspergers Syndrome became more debilitating and my GP prescribed me many different SSRI/SNRI and benzos at varying dosages to no success. I have spoken this through with my mum and she said she will come with me to the psychiatrist in hope I can get some medication to help me able to do CBT without freaking out and not saying a word.

Should I tell my psych that past MDMA use completely reversed the effects of Aspergers or will that stop me being prescribed a medication I truly believe would help me tremendously.

So my main question is given my age 24 what are the chances of being prescribed a stimulant such as dexamphetamine to help me through the CBT and how long does CBT last? (as in do I need to keep doing it forever) Will i be dependant on medications for the rest of my life?

First off, let me just say one thing. Sounds like you've had a tough childhood/adolescence and even adulthood, and for that, I feel bad for you bro, but it could be worse, you could have brain damage. Many, many people with Asperger's have made something of their lives and themselves (look at Sheldon Cooper from that terrible show, 'Big Bang Theory', his character suffers from Asperger's, as in like awkward situations socially etc. can be put down to a quirky personality, and some people find this type of behaviour interesting, as it violates the norms of society and the restrictions it has upon oneself).

Treatment usually consists of attacking the co-morbid conditions associated with Asperger's. Attentional deficits are best treated with Long Acting formulations of methylphenidate, such as Concerta/Ritalin LA. Although if you're super keen on it, Dexamphetamine in a low dosage (10-15 mg twice a day, so in other words, 4-6 tablets a day) is an option.

Considering you were diagnosed as a child/adolescent and have a prior history of Dexamphetamine prescriptions in your name (even though you didn't take it), this suggests to me that you are eligible for Dexamphetamine. Many, many cases of adult ADHD (people over 18 years of age) taking stimulants to treat their condition(s) are prevalent throughout Australia, and the world.

For Concerta 54 mg: Treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in a patient diagnosed between the ages of 6 and 18 years inclusive, who has demonstrated a response to immediate release methylphenidate hydrochloride with no emergence of serious adverse events, and who requires continuous coverage over 12 hours.

For Ritalin: Use in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, in accordance with State/Territory law.

For Dexamphetamine: Use in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, in accordance with State/Territory law;
Narcolepsy.

Don't tell your psychiatrist straight away that you have used MDMA in the past, as MDMA ain't available on a prescription, fucking government...rather, once you've built up a good psydoc-patient relationship, tell him that you have flirted with MDMA in the past, and it works.

As for your crippling, severe anxiety, there is always Hypnodorm as a last resort.
Here's what it says the criteria for prescribing Hypnodorm is:
Patients with terminal disease;

Patients with refractory phobic or anxiety states.

Note

For short-term use and palliative care. This drug should not be used as the first line of treatment. Other PBS-listed benzodiazepines should have been adequately tried and found to be ineffective or inappropriate. Authorities for increased quantities and/or repeats may be granted to patients with terminal disease, and other patients who have been shown to be dependent on this item by an unsuccessful attempt at gradual withdrawal.

Dexamphetamine (20-30 mg a day) plus Flunitrazepam (2 mg a day) should be a good combination to treat your condition (Dexamphetamine for increased sociability/willingness to participate in social activities, and Hypnodorm for your anxiety. As for CBT, keep working away at that with your psychologist, don't tell the psychiatrist that you're engaging in psychotherapy with a psychologist otherwise he might be a bit offended and treat you like shit. Also, go for an old timer psychiatrist. One that's been around for years, been practicing Psychiatric Medicine for at least 20-30 years.

Hope that this helps you.

Dexamphetamine is now a med for Asperger?

Dexamphetamine has a lot of off-label uses, even in Australia. Obesity/narcolepsy/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Daytime Sleepiness/ADHD/autism spectrum disorders and of course, ADHD. The shrink, if he is a decent enough of a man and cares about his patients well-being, will just say to Medicare/DDU or whomever he calls in order to get clearance for prescribing the drug, that this patient suffers from ADHD.

Hey,

I spoke to that mate of mine who used to work with ASD kids. He has been out of that game for a while so he said he would have a think and get back to me with any useful resources. He also said "Oh yeah, there is defineatly stuff out there that can help". So there is.

Also sounds like Charles Bronson knows what he is talking about with the drug treatment stuff.

Put the drugs and and the CBT together and sounds like you could be on a winner.

Stay positive mate, there is always hope in any situation.

I showed my doctor a letter that my mum wrote me and he referred me to an ADD specialist, even though the main point of the letter was the aspergers, one of the first questions the receptionist asked me was if I had been prescribed dexies before and thankfully I have. I am 100 % sure I have ADD (with ADHD tendencies sometimes) though so it will be helpful anyway and if he thinks I need to see someone else for Aspergers as well then so be it.

This is the first step anyway, wish me luck! thanks for all the help :)

Didnt know dex were prescribed for aspergers either. How does it help? I understand the theory behind stims and add/adhd but I dont get how it could help apergers.

Also the couple of posters who mentioned that they suffer anxiety but also use dexies dont you find the back end of the dex as theyre wearing off that you get even more anxious? The comedown I guess. I have dex for add and often get anxiety as theyre wearing off.... like my internal dialogue starts kicks and is made worse due to the effect of the stims still in my system. I way prefer having a benzo to have post-dex these days.

I have put the main points in bold so you can skim over it. I have not been yet, scheduled it for a couple months, as you arn't allowed any THC in your system, also someone who knows you well and can vouch you dont/have not taken any illicit substances in the past must come to the appointment, I guess im lucky they let the weed pass as I admitted to self medicating with weed but denied everything else. You still need to have 0 THC in your system at the time of appointment and probably frequently drug testing I assume. As I said before I was prescribed them previously so that does give me an advantage, the initial appointment is very pricey, I wont mention exactly as not sure if thats allowed. I was/still am very inattentive and have alot of ADD traits but was diagnosed with Aspergers, treated with dex, as there is no real treatment for Aspergers.

Treatment for Asperger’s Disorder
By Marina Benjamen, Ph.D.

There are a wide variety of helpful treatments for Asperger’s Disorder that help an individual learn better social skills and communication cues, to help them be able to interact socially more naturally. At present, like most mental disorders, there is no “cure” for Asperger’s Disorder. But by focusing on learning ways to cope with the symptoms and pick up on social cues, most individuals with Asperger’s Disorder lead fairly typical lives, with close friends and loved ones.

Psychosocial Interventions for Asperger’s

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the ideal treatment for Asperger’s coordinates therapies that address the three core symptoms of the disorder: poor communication skills, obsessive or repetitive routines, and physical clumsiness. There is no single best treatment package for all children with AS, but most professionals agree that the earlier the intervention, the better.

An effective treatment program builds on the child’s interests, offers a predictable schedule, teaches tasks as a series of simple steps, actively engages the child’s attention in highly structured activities, and provides regular reinforcement of behavior. It may include social skills training, cognitive behavioral therapy, medication for co-existing conditions, and other measures.
•Individual psychotherapy to help the individual learn social skills training, to better detect social cues, and how to deal with the emotions surrounding the disorder
•Parent education and training
•Behavioral modification
•Social skills training
•Educational interventions

Psychiatric Medications
•For hyperactivity, inattention and impulsivity: Psychostimulants (methyphenidate, dextroamphetamine, metamphetamine), clonidine, Tricyclic Antidepressants (desipramine, nortriptyline), Strattera (atomoxetine)

•For irritability and aggression: Mood Stabilizers (valproate, carbamazepine, lithium), Beta Blockers (nadolol, propranolol), clonidine, naltrexone, Neuroleptics (risperidone, olanzapine, quetiapine, ziprasidone, haloperidol)
•For preoccupations, rituals and compulsions: SSRIs (fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, paroxetine), Tricyclic Antidepressants (clomipramine)
•For anxiety: SSRIs (sertraline, fluoxetine), Tricyclic Antidepressants (imipramine, clomipramine, nortriptyline)

With effective treatment, children with Asperger’s disorder can learn to cope with their disabilities, but they may still find social situations and personal relationships challenging. Many adults with AS are able to work successfully in mainstream jobs, although they may continue to need encouragement and moral support to maintain an independent life.

What is Adderall (Amphetamine Dextroamphetamine)?

Amphetamine and dextroamphetamine is a central nervous system stimulant. It affects chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control.

Amphetamine and dextroamphetamine is used to treat narcolepsy and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Amphetamine and dextroamphetamine may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Asperger's Syndrome Treatment

Children who have Asperger's syndrome think and function very differently than other children. In most cases, they need special help and coaching to function more successfully in their school and home environments. Treatments for AS focus on helping children manage in these settings.

Special education services, behavior therapy, speech therapy, and physical or occupational therapy may help the child learn to function more effectively and harmoniously with others. Training and counseling for parents and other family members also may be helpful.

There are no specific medications used to treat AS. However, children who suffer from anxiety, depression, hyperactivity, or obsessive-compulsive disorder as a result of Asperger's syndrome may benefit from medication to help with these symptoms. When these medications are prescribed, the child will be monitored by his or her health care provider at regular intervals throughout treatment.

To treat depression, drugs such as fluoxetine (Prozac®, Sarafem®) may be prescribed. It is important for parents to work closely with the child's health care provider and to fully understand how to monitor the child for side effects of antidepressant medication. In some children and teenagers, these medications may increase suicidal thoughts and actions.

Other side effects that should be reported to the child's health care provider immediately include the following:
•Aggressive or impulsive behavior
•Agitation or restlessness
•Increased activity level
•Increased chattiness
•Increased depression or anxiety
•Increased irritability
•Panic attacks
•Sleep difficulties
•Strange moods or behavior changes

Children should be monitored especially closely when they first begin taking antidepressant medication or if the dosage of the medication is changed. These medications should not be discontinued or the dosage changed without consulting a qualified health care provider.

To treat obsessive-compulsive behavior (OCD), clomipramine (Anafranil®) may be prescribed. Clomipramine is also an antidepressant and increases the risk for suicidal thoughts and actions in children and teens. Patients should be monitored closely while taking this medication. Side effects that should be reported immediately to the child's health care provider include the following:
•Breathing difficulties
•Depression
•Eye pain
•Hallucinations
•Increased heart rate
•Loss of bladder control or difficulty with urination
•Muscle stiffness
•Seizures
•Tiredness
•Tremors
•Weakness

The following side effects, which generally are less serious, should be reported to the child's health care provider if they persist or cause particular discomfort:
•Changes in appetite
•Drowsiness
•Headache
•Intestinal symptoms
•Loss of memory or difficulty concentrating
•Nervousness
•Sinus congestion

These medications should not be discontinued or the dosage changed without consulting a qualified health care provider.

To treat inattentiveness or hyperactivity, stimulants such as methylphenidate (Concerta®, Ritalin®) or dextroamphetamine (Dexadrine®) may be prescribed. These medications can be habit forming and should be used with caution in patients who have heart problems or psychiatric conditions. The child's health care provider will take a careful health history and perform a medical evaluation before prescribing this medication.

Methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine can interfere with the child's growth and weight gain. If this occurs, the child's health care provider should be contacted right away. The following serious side effects also should be reported immediately

If you have any tendancies towards recreational drug use I'd highly advise against using dexamphetamine for therapeutic reasons.

^I'd say the same, but this kid is still naive - "WOW SCHEDULE 8 DRUG SCRIPT - NOW I CAN DO ALL MY WORK, NEVER SLEEP AND PARTY LIKE A CHAMPION".

Or at least that how it works for all my friends in the same place as this guy... then they grow up. Pity fried brains just don't work that well anymore.

Maybe your right, it just gets to me alot, when my boss thinks im usless for forgetting/being distracted all the time, you can understand that right. Also the dose of benzos I need to control my anxiety is higher than what my doc will prescribe and I am terrified of a seizure or something, thats not to say I dont abuse them every now and then. I have a hard enough time controlling my benzo use, let alone a dex script..... Maybe my brail will thank me more if I just keep self medicating with weed... At the moment I cant even get the good ol' greens though and SSRI/SNRI doesnt really make me feel any better, although I have only tried about 4.

On that note, FMI how much worse is dexie use (abuse) than LSD/weed/opiates limited to Tramadol/Codeine

Actually I meant to ask as too... did you mention that you use dexies to help CBT sessions? As is cognitive behavioural therapy?

Nah I didnt, mr ibis makes a good point, long term abuse of amphetamines causing brain damage, the insomnia associated with it, the withdraws, the crash ect.... Im considering just cancelling the appointment, hopefully finding a consistent hookup for some greens and do some dancing with Lucy in the rain.....

Life sucks then you die fuck the world and lets get high 8(

I dunno man. Im prescribed dexies for add and I find them pretty fucking helpful. Writing essays and reports is almost a joy (well it absolutely is when you know the subject matter well) after a couple of dex. And exam study is so much more manageable.... I just sit down and do what needs to be done. No messin' about and wasting time on pointless shit. Ill sit down and smash out a few hours then call it a day. Impossible without dex.

Sure I abuse them occasionally. Nowhere near as much as I used to when I first got them. I used to pretty much waste the entire amount each month on going out... along with some mates we used to go through a stupid amount in a night out. I dont do that so much now but Ill still use them for gaming... boy do they make gaming so much more interesting and fun. Im always reminded of something something Jesse in Breaking Bad said in describing his meth use to a non-user... "it makes everything maximum interesting".

And its so true. Obviously dex to a lesser extent than meth, but all stims do that when you think about it. Whether thats playing 5 hours of Skyrim and loving it like when you were 14yrs old, or doing a 5000 word on a subject you have absolutely no interest in.

What happens when you run out b4 your next script but, do you crash hard and withdraw, also are you worried about brain damage as a result from taking (abusing) them (using for gaming/nights out, which im sure i would do), which brings my next question surely all drugs are bad for you in different ways, are dexies any worse to take then to self medicate with weed/LSD/codeine/other mild opi8s??

WOOO coming up on 300mg tramadol, feels dandy!!! I cant help but take another pill, to make it 400mg this is why i dont think I should start dexies I would just eat them like candy... Maybe I should reconsider SSRI/SNRI as I LOVE the mood boost Tramadol provides, makes me happy! I dont think Tramadol is prescribed for depression but. Perhaps i just have not found the right one yet but the side effects are horrid! What are your thoughts once I havbe tried 4 or 5 with no relief should I keep trying the SSRI/SNRI route to try and find the right one or is that a preety good indication they arnt for me?

Can you point me to a reference that dex can cause brain damage in the long term? Not sure where youre getting that from. Do you mean neurotransmitter depletion ie. dopamine, or genuine brain damage?

Re the gap between them running out getting the next script, well yeah sometimes it can be pretty fucked. I dont find theres too much of a crash. Theres some tiredness that you get over in a couple days though. I find the worst thing is the slight depression for a few days because you suddenly dont have any interest in a bunch of stuff that you did have. Or you dont enjoy them as much. Again though this only lasts for a few days, maybe a week, and you get over it with the knowledge that its only a couple weeks or whatever until you get the next script anyway.

I think the couple weeks break is ultimately good for you anyway. Probably helps keep tolerance down and allows you a chance to take a breather and take a break that super focused constantly stimulating yourself mode that can get a bit obsessive. For me anyway. Its good to take a break.
