The page indeed provides a method to purity the HBr. It is not a big deal to do so if you have a proper laboratory, you might as well just do a column chromatography. If you have a proper lab, Shulgin's choice is obvious. The only reason I can see for cleaning the HBr salt is that you not able to distill the free base. With a vacuum pump this is absolutely safe and I can not support the reasoning from the page against it.
It would be interesting if one of our beloved Dutch members could run a lab test on tanned HBr salt to establish the purity.
