The Travel Thread - Second Destination

I've been to all the places in Laos you're talking about, and also to Vietnam... pretty much covered distance from Hanoi to Hoi An. Loved Luang Prabang and I might give Vang Vieng another shot, even just for some bike riding or something like that.

My fiance has suggested that we should go to Saigon, Nha Trang and Dalat next time we get back to Vietnam as he has covered it down there, and I haven't. The problem however is that I also want to go to Cambodia and China, so we really need to decide what the hell were doing and stick with it. I'm also seriously considering Burma and maybe some beach trip for a few days, or Chang Mai.

dodgy as FUCK.

C'mon Felix, you don't believe everything the government tell you do you? ;)

Dodgy as fuck politically, but that is almost certain not to impinge on the traveller. Even that website admits hardly anyone actually has a problem. On safety terms there is no reason not to go to Burma. I'd love to. It's the governments political duty to put people off going there - for political reasons.

Those travel pages are always crap. You'd be scared shitless to travel Laos if you read that. It's a joke.

Tip Miss Peks - Da Lat in Vietnam really isn't worth it. Rains all the time, only one real thing to see (crazy house - communist architecture meets psychedelia, is brilliant but not worth 10 hours travel in and out to Da Lat)...go to Burma.

hah, fair enough. that was the first link in a google search. ;)

it still doesn't look like a place i'd like to visit though...

I was gonna go to Burma but got lazy, it's supposed to be fantastic and I've no issues about going. I've heard nothing but good things, the people are supposed to be fantastic and welcoming, the sights incredible, apparently some of the most incredible temples in SE Asia as well as great beaches and snorkelling in places. The Government doesn't bother tourists.

For what reason?

Saigon is totally shit. The place is a chaotic dump, absolutely crazy traffic 24/7. If you thought Hanoi was bad then Saigon is worse, at least Hanoi has a few 'nicer' areas, lakes n parks etc. Nha Trang is pretty decent. Didn't go to Da Lat because few folk said there wasn't much to see or do.

Cambodia is amazing. Siem Reap, Kampot & Sihanoukville are all excellent. I <3 Sihanoukville it's the perfect place for me. Lots of nice beaches full of beach shacks and bars, day trips and activities if you are interested, great food, cheap beer (25 cents!) and a good nightlife ranging from pubs to beach raves to live music bars to casinos. I'd go back there in a second. :)

For what reason?
because i watch the news sometimes and the things that have been happening there have been pretty horrifying. excuse me if i've been brainwashed by the media.

i usually work in shitholes, i'd rather go on holiday in nicer places. ;)

These bad things you've seen on the news don't happen to tourists though. From pics I've seen it's far from a shithole either, looks stunning in places and charming in others, very old fashioned and quaint almost.

Off to some safe, sterile and sensible (read: boring) European capital city for you then. ;)

Hahahaha.

What do you say to that, Mr It's-So-Cool-Hanging-Out-On-Kho-San-Road?;)

Because working in a secure compound on a nice and safe oil rig is ooooooh so dangerous. ;)

true enough. and it must definitely be less safe getting pished every single night and banging HIV-riddled ladyboy hookers, i'll give him that. ;)

Exactly you've got armed guards. Safe as houses. ;)

of course i'm jealous of the actual travel
i can still think this stereotypical backpacker attitude you're displaying is pretty lulz though

What you doing in this thread? Going to the shops / job centre doesn't count as travel. :D
