Who Do SO MANY Americans think "The UK" and "Africa" are countries?

You're trolling about Texas being a country :p
Lol I am not. It was a nation for all of ten years. See: Republic of Texas

By your own definitions of what a country is, Texas counts. So does Palestine. So does Taiwan. Catalonia. Puerto Rico. Guam. I could go on and on, but all these 'countries' are confined within the laws and borders of other countries.

I'm talking currently lol, not two centuries ago.

You can take this list with whatever salt you need.. then take sixty years and add it to where you think the US is right now.

Here is another take..

The thing with the Chinese is they are currently listing their biggest inventions as the Chinese version of something already invented by another country.

Innovative does not seem to be their strong suite.. that may have started in the whatever the fuck dynasty.. it’s like you go tour Europe and look at the amazing art.. It’s all the same until one person made a small leap and you hear through the audio phones that it is was the first time in three hundred years an artist thought to do this small change.. and it brought on a new age in European painting.. look close its revolutionary.

What does this have to do with anything?

It has to do with the underlying discussion that has permeated this thread. Abilities of the US’s higher ED candidates, institutions and performance questioned. The America bashing that included higher education.. lower education presented as a possible reason we supposedly don’t know a country from a continent.

It also signals out the amazing value and rarity of innovation.

I never mentioned anything to do with high educations, Universities, etc.

There's no way Geography teachers teach that, right?
I'm American, and pretty good at geography and well traveled. The issue: being ignorant and uneducated in my country is becoming a badge of honor; people who can't point at Australia on a map are unfortunately becoming elected officials and keep promoting a horrible education system. I've seen highschool aged kids who cannot spell 5 letter words and perform simple math...The loud and uneducated ones try to stay in power by keeping the masses dumb and content...with a splash of drama and entertainment. It's panem et circenses. With abortion rights gone in more than half the country, teen pregnancies will result in more cannon fodder for the self-serving demagogues and snake oil salesmen.

[the heart because I agree with you, not because I like that all of that is happening....the abortion thing is insanely backwards]

I will say this only once ...cause the first time I didnt say exact these words. Every President, King, PM, leader of the communist country will make basic (grades 1-8) education obligatory by the power of the law and then he/she/sheit/fluid unicorn several things:
1)Instill obediance as the highest virtue. This is done ba making 6-12 year olds to seat quietly and robbing the minds that are developing warp speed of any interest by technique "all repeat after me". It doesnt matter how useful it is. On the contrary- maje them memorise things that will soon be forgoten as most of them no child will ever need then after the test is over.

2) School has to be mandatory so parents can go to work not thinking of their kids.
3)Learn uniformity with a grain of real value so kids could enter the workforce and not be overwhelmed.
4) As everyone is schooled to be a soldier keep an eye for those that are exceling. If they are not submissive enough crush them while their young and make an example for others what will happen if they stray of the rigid line. Especially talented kids who also have strong will and are not easily put back in line are the ones that need to be destroyed so they don't corrupt other kids with funny ideas like "critical thinking and standing up for the thingscthey believe in. Especially those who try to help their peers. There are many methods but ignoring, punishing for virtue and repeating lines like "aren't you know it all...I must warn you that your friends (the world) will not like someone who behaves that way", "are you his lawyer?", "again you with your philosophy...cant you jusrmt once follow class without interupying"...
5) Smart kids that are unwilling to cave are poor solider material cause they tend to use their heads and morality over orders.
6) Make public education incrementally worse so populus os easier to ruled.

I could go on but I am tired but it all comes down to 99% of kids get no chance either way, and true education is kept for thosevin power and their children.

The artbof education is the art of creating masses of obedient citizens not able to think critically. That way they will be screwed in life but will not know what to do. Better yet they will be frightened of being knowledgeable cause they saw what happened to kids/people that werevfigting for themselves and they dont want to stirr the water. In thus maber they are easy to manipulate and civil disobediance and thus civil war is off the table no matter how exploited they are.

This are few principals that are used in (almost)every classroom and good authoritarians are vell versed in using them.

I strayed a bit off topic but I wanted to write it down. Off to sleep I go, I an on CET.

100% correct. It's easy to manipulate those who are poorly educated and taught to fall in line, be submissive and blame the 'others' for their problems (insert here: immigrants, dark skinned people, jews, muslims, media, etc.).
You're describing what some American party/ideology is doing to my country. I'll let you guess who they are...
PS: I'm and independent and centrist...

That is what every country is doing to a bigger or lesser degree. More powerfull the country and "the criminals that made it" (ruling "elites" are basically the same as murderers and robbers who are in jail, while "elites", "oligarchs", "top tier politicians", "technocrats"...succeed in crime and have huge military following backing their gang up) more subtle but also much stronger in effect will the dumbing of populous be. Unfortunately I don't expect shift towards peoplle liberating themselves. Threy are conditioned throughly and the first step should be admitting that you got fucked and are
pretty dumb in yorur 30s, 40s, 50s... Who wants to admit that to themselves? Its easier to block the sygnals with lot of noise and go allong. Infact I believe that thanks to new understanding in the field of cognitive science we are getting very close (50-100 years ) to the day when people will be more controlled and dumbed down then they are now in countries like China, N. Korea, Russia... And as Orwell and huxley wrote in their manuals - people will demand that state. They will love their servitude.

And then there will be no more difference to talk about as people from USA will be basically same as people from Eastern Europe or New Zeland (just to stay on topic 🤣).

Getting back to the Texas thing....

I've uttered the following statement many times over the last 40 years and always
gotten a hearty laugh from whomever heard it. BUT I changed the state in question depending on what was going on at the time. Other places named include:
Alabama
Mississippi
Florida
California

Texas is okay, but I prefer the United States.

i actually acknowledged that many US universities are in the global creme de la creme here

do you have factual counterarguments to my posts or do you just not like them because you perceive them as 'America bashing'? if you've read closely you'll see i'm not exactly complimentary of the education system i went through either.

I’m not sure why you concluded that I “don’t like” your posts. I don’t agree with some ideas presented in them. One idea is that a 3-4 year doctorate program indicates a stronger program or out coming PhD compared to a six year program?

you dismissed it as 'america bashing,' and seemed a bit defensive- posting information that had already posted regarding the calibre of US universities on a global stage.

i didn't say a 3.5-4 year program is stronger. i said that the undergrad programs in countries where this is the length of a phd are stronger.

all phds compete on a global stage for academic jobs. so, the outcome of a phd from a good university anywhere should (and roughly does, research trends and student attributes obviously impact this though) give you the same opportunities. in order for that to happen for US students, they need to spend upwards of 2 years longer on a phd. this suggests that there preparation for their phd program was lacking compared to other countries. were US PhDs to be of a much higher standard, you would expect people from the US to dominate every academic department globally, which is not the case, they end up on an equal footing, so the benefit of the extra time is 'catching up' not 'overtaking.'

phds are extremely stressful, fucking awful tbh, and can be expensive if you don't have funding. if they could get away with doing them in the same length of time as european students, i have no doubt US students would. so there must be a reason. and the reason is that US undergrad degrees do not prepare you as well for research in a field than european phds.
